Boxers Score Big In Season Opener

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Despite the challenges the Pacific women's basketball team had early in their preseason practices, the Boxers came out big in their season opener against Walla Walla University, claiming a 86-56 victory on Thursday in non-conference action at the Winter Education Complex Gymnasium.
 
"It was a good starting point for us," said head coach Sharon Rissmiller. "Our strength is in our team and I'm very pleased with the complete team effort."
 
Alex Pfefferle (Sr., Twin Falls, Idaho) started her senior season off on the right foot, leading the Boxers with 14 points. She shot 4 of 10 from the field, including 1 of 4 from three-point range. She was almost perfect from the free throw line, going 5 for 6. Olivia Cook (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Abby Talboy (So., Boise, Idaho) each scored 12 points. Cook was perfect from the field, shooting 6 of 6 and Talboy was 5 of 12. Cook also picked up a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Nani Ostrom (Jr., Juneau, Alaska) was perfect all around, shooting 4 of 4 from the field, 1 of 1 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the charity stripe. Newcomer Abby Jones (Jr., Haines, Alaska) scored 10 points, going perfect from the field (4 of 4).
 
Overall the Boxers shot 51 percent from the field (32 of 63), 22 percent from the three-point line (4 of 18) and 64 percent from the free throw line (18-28). Walla Walla (0-7) shot 49 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 68 percent from the free throw line.
 
The Boxers improve to 1-0 on the season. The Boxers will play two home games next week, hosting Evergreen State on Tuesday and Simpson (Calif.) on Wednesday. Tip off against Evergreen State will be at 5:30 p.m. while Wednesday's game will start at 1 p.m.
