Boxers Struggle To Find Offense In Loss To Chapman

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Pacific women's basketball team led once the entire contest as they could not find enough offense to claim a victory, suffering a 56-42 loss to Chapman University on Wednesday morning at St. Francis School.

The Boxers were down 4-0 in the first three minutes of the match before
Olivia Mayorga-Overtone (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) made a layup to start the scoring for the Boxers.
Jonica Durbin (Jr., Seaback, Wash.) tied the game for the Boxers with a made jumper. 30 seconds later,
Sarah Curl (Fr., Portland, Ore.) pulled up from the field to put the Boxers ahead for the first and only time of the game. The Boxers did not score until the 9:02 minute mark after a made jumper from Curl, but Chapman answered with a jumper from the field to take a 21-8 lead over the Boxers.

Abby Jones (Jr., Haines, Alaska) cut the Panther lead back to 11, but Chapman was able to score seconds later. The Boxers cut the lead to five after
Annette Highley (Jr., Juneau, Alaska) had an easy layup, but a Panther buzzer shot put them ahead by seven, heading into halftime with a 31-24 lead.

The Boxers had a rough time in the second half holding Chapman, as the Panthers put more points on the board to secure the win. At the 15:50 minute mark, Curl pulled up for a made jumper, but the Panthers answered with two more points. The Boxers held the Panthers for the next three minutes and sent Mayorga-Overtone to line, making one of two free throws. The Panthers took their biggest lead of the game with three minutes left, leading 54-36. The Boxers turned to fouls to try and gain possession, but was not successful as the Panthers made two free throws and took care of the ball to finish the game out.

Mayorga-Overtone scored a team-high 13 points, shooting 33 percent (4 of 12) from the field, 20 percent (1 of 5) from three-point range and 67 percent from the charity stripe. She also tallied 3 steals and one assist. Curl was second on the team in points with 12. She shot a team-high 67 percent (6 of 9) from the field, grabbed four rebounds and three steals.
Kati Sheldon (Sr., Paso Robles, Calif.) brought down a team-high eight rebounds.

Overall, the Boxers shot 30 percent (18 of 60) from the field, 15 percent (2 of 13) from beyond the arc and 67 percent (4 of 6) from the free throw line. The Boxers scored 42 points on the bench and 24 points in the paint. The team tallied 10 steals and four assists.

The Boxers drop to 3-3 on the season while the Panthers improve to 5-2. Pacific will finished up their road trip to Hawaii tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (HST) with a their first match up in program history against Campbellsville (Ky.) at St. Francis School.
