Shipley, Kawai Improve Indoor Marks At UW Indoor Open

SEATTLE – Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) and Kelson Kawai (Jr., North Kohala, Hawaii) both improved on their season best indoor marks on Sunday as the two represented Pacific at the UW Indoor Open, held at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
Shipley finished fourth in the second section of the men's 3,000-meter run, finishing in a time of 8:42.68. The performance marked an eight-second improvement over his time the previous weekend at the Vandal Collegiate. Shipley had the 18th fastest time out of 76 athletes spread among three sections and also marked a lifetime best at the distance.
Kawai added two inches to his season best, placing sixth in the second flight of the men's high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 2.75 inches. A total of eight athletes finished ahead of Kawai with clearances of 6 feet, 4.75 inches or greater.
Pacific will close out the indoor portion of the 2013 track and field schedule with two meets this week. Pacific will race the Tuesday Night at the Races on Tuesday followed by the Pilot Indoor next Sunday. Both meets take place at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.
