Solid Pitching Secures Doubleheader Sweep For Boxers

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific softball team used solid pitching performances from
Marissa Reichard (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.),
Sara Aasness (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) and
Jenn Yano (So., Ontario, Ore.) to secure a 9-3 and 2-1 victories over Northwest Christian in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Sherman Larkins Stadium.
GAME 1
Boxers opened the scoring in the first inning after
Becca Moen (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) started off the inning with a double to centerfield.
Rachel Roberts (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) layed down a bunt for a hit to advance Moen to third. Reichard used a sacrifice fly to send home Moen home for the first run of the game. Roberts then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Northwest Christian's (2-6) catcher.
Reichard singled to center field to open a three-run third inning. Reichard advanced to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on Megan Winan's (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) ground out to the shortstop. A single up the middle from
Emmie Moser (Fr., Mt. Vernon, Wash.) scored Reichard. Ashley Mitch (Fr., Redmond, Wash.) tripled up the middle to score Moser.
Kylee Oshiro (So., Aiea, Hawaii) would single up the middle to score Mitchell.
The Beacons came up in the top of the fourth inning to score two runs off starting pitcher, Reichard. With two outs, Gabby Stover doubled to right-center. Parker Bonfife roped a single between short and third to score Stover. Addy Hoskins singled down the right field line to score Bonfife.
Moen started the fourth inning off with a single to left field. Roberts once again dropped a bunt to advance Moen to second, but was also safe herself. Moen and Roberts moved up a base on Reichard's sacrifice bunt before
Jessie Moore (Fr., Portland, Ore.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Moen, putting the Boxers up 6-2.
The Beacons scored one run in the top of the sixth off reliever, Aasness. Stover singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw and Laynee Bevans scored. Randi Kostner also tried to advance, but was thrown out at home by Mitchell. Aasness struck out the next two batters to send the Boxers in for their last at bats.
The Boxers used a three run sixth inning to secure the victory. Shikada reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and Moen doubled to left center to score Shikada from first. Roberts singled to left field to advance Moen to third. Moen would then score on a throwing error by the catcher. Reichard tallied her second sarifice fly of the game to score Robert.
Aasness used solid pitching in the last inning to take the Boxers to their second victory of the season, going three-up-three-down. Reichard (1-0) collected her first victory of the season, striking out five and allowing three runs in five innings of work. She also was 1 for 1 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Aasness struck out two and allowed two hits in two innings of work. Sarah Lawhorn took the loss for the Beacons.
Moen and Roberts both went 3 for 4 at the plate, Moen with one RBI. Winans was 2 for 4 with one RBI and Moore was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
GAME 2
A two-run third inning was just enough for the Boxers to collect their third victory of the season. Yano led of the inning with a single to left field.
Maddie Collura (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) came in to pinch run for Yano. She stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Moen then singled to left field to score Collura. Robert's then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced Moen to second. Reichard singled to the right side to score Moen.
The Beacons came back with a double down the left field line to open the fourth inning. With two outs, Jordan Bennett doubled through the left side for an RBI. Starter Yano forced a ground out to get out of the inning.
Yano (1-2) threw three scoreless innings to secure the Boxer victory. She struck out three, allowed just two hits and one run in seven innings of work. She also led the Boxers at the plate, going 2 for 3. Bennett took the loss for the Beacons, striking out five and allowing four hits. Moen went 1 for 2 at the plate with one RBI and Reichard was 1 for 3 with one RBI.
The Boxers (3-3) will travel to the Northwest Cup tournament on Saturday to play two games. Their first game of the day is against Concordia (Ore.) at 1 p.m. and their second is against Oregon Tech at 3 p.m.
