Sprinters Lead Way In Second To Last Indoor Meet Of Season

PORTLAND – Emily Tuffey (So., Valencia, Calif.) and newcomer Heron Azevedo (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) turned in a pair of strong sprint performances to lead the Pacific track and field teams at the Univ. of Portland Tuesday Night at the Races, held at the Chiles Center.
 
Tuffey led the way for the Boxers, in the women's 400 meters, finishing first in the sixth section of the race in a time of 1:05.32.  The time was the eighth fastest in a series of rapid races, which was won by Alesha Cronie in a meet record time of 1:00.82.  Hayley Palmer (So., Sisters, Ore.) placed third in the fifth section of the race in a time of 1:09.42.
 
Azevedo, running in his first meet for the Boxers, finished second in the third section in the men's 400 meters in a time of 55.60 seconds.  The performance was also the eighth fastest in the meet's 14 sections.
 
The rest of Pacific's competitors were in the shot put.  Tim Claussen (Fr., Yamhill, Ore.) led four Boxers in the men's shot put, placing second with a mark of 38 feet, 4.25 inches.  Chris Johnson (Jr., Everett, Wash.) was third with a mark of 37 feet, 7.75 inches.  James Peckham (Fr., Everett, Wash.) placed ninth at 34 feet, 7 inches while Jesse Bethke (So., Cave Junction, Ore.) was 10th with a mark of 34 feet, 5.75 inches.
 
Sara Davidson (Fr., St. Paul, Ore.) placed third in the women's shot put with a mark of 31 feet, 8 inches.  Katie Rock (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) was third with a mark of 30 feet, 2.75 inches.
 
Pacific will conclude the indoor portion of the 2013 schedule on Sunday back at the Chiles Center as the Boxers compete in the Pilot Indoor.
