Opponents Outlast Boxers At Northwest Cup
HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – The Pacific softball team scored eight runs in two games, but wasn't enough to out last their opponents, suffering a 8-3 loss to Concordia (Ore.) and 8-5 loss to Oregon Tech in non-conference action at the Northwest Cup in Clackamas on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1 vs. CONCORDIA (Ore.) 8-3
Concordia (Ore.) (9-0) started off the top of the first by scoring one run to get on the board early. Starting pitcher,
Shannon Miller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) got the first batter to ground out. Concordia's Kate Santos reached on an error by
Quirena Natividad (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii). Taylor Copher singled to left field to advance Santos to second. A hit batter loaded the bases for the Cavs. Miller walked the next batter in for the Cavs to lead 1-0 in the first inning.
Miller shutdown the Cavs the next two innings before the Boxers put themselves on the board.
Ashley Mitchell (Fr., Redmond, Wash.) bunted and was safe first. Mitchell stole second before both Natividad and
Becca Moen (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) were walked to load the bases. Mitchell scored the first Boxer run on a pass ball by the catcher. The Boxers had bases full again after Cav's starting pitcher, Ashley Suter walked two consecutive batters.
Emmie Moser (Fr., Mt. Vernon, Wash.) walked to score Natividad to lead the Cavs 2-1 heading into the fourth inning.
The Cavs scored seven runs in the fourth after a grand slam off reliever
Sara Aasness (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) by designated player Cassidy Horner.
Marissa Reichard (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) came into relieve Aasness in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Moser added another run for the Boxers, blasting out her first career home run as a Boxer. The Boxers were not able to get any offense going the rest of the game.
Shannon Miller (0-1) took the loss for the Boxers. Suter collected the victory for the Cavs, allowing three runs, three hits and collecting 15 strikeouts to go along with seven walks in seven innings of work. The Boxers (3-4) tallied only three hits in seven innings. Moser led the Boxers going 1 for 2 with a solo home run.
GAME 2 vs. OREGON TECH 8-5
With two walks in the first inning, the Boxers got on the board with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Moen started off the inning with a walk and then
Rachel Roberts (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) also walked to put runners on first and second. Reichard moved Moen to third off a fly out to center field. Moen scored on a pass ball by the catcher.
Boxer starter,
Chloe Hanson (So., Trail, Ore.) shut down the Oregon Tech (7-1) in the first inning, recording all ground ball outs. The Owls tied the game up in the second inning Melissa Logan reached on an error by Roberts. The Owls put down a bunt and was safe at first before a ground out to Roberts scored a run for the Owls.
The Boxer put together a one run third inning when Roberts singled to start the action. Roberts stole second to put herself in scoring position for Reichard. Reichard doubled to left center to score Roberts, putting the Boxers ahead 2-1.
A three-run fifth inning capped the scoring for the Boxers. Moen singled to left field with one out. Moen advanced to second on a ground out by Roberts. Moen advanced to third on a wild pitch Reichard singled to right field to score Moen for the first run of the inning. Reichard would then score on a wild pitch.
Jessie Moore (Fr., Portland, Ore.) blasted her second home run of the season with two outs to take a 5-1 lead, heading into sixth inning.
The Owls produced seven runs in the sixth inning to claim the victory. The Boxers couldn't come up with any offense in the final inning.
Hanson (0-1) took the loss for the Boxers in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned. She struck out two and walked one in six innings of work. Taylor Schmidt (3-0) collected the victory in the circle for the Owls. Reichard led the Boxers at the plate going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Roberts was 1 for 2 while Mitchell and Moen were both 1 for 3.
The Boxers (3-5) will now head into Northwest Conference action next weekend. They will play host to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Puget Sound on Sunday. First pitch for both days will be at noon.
