Boxers Shutout Puget Sound In A Pair Of Five-Inning Games

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific softball team pounded out 18 hits on the day and only allowed four hits in a pair of five-inning shutouts against Puget Sound in Northwest Conference softball action on Sunday afternoon at Sherman Larkins Stadium.
 
In the first game, the Boxers picked up a 8-0 victory after a four-run first inning, including four extra base hits. The second game started with three runs in the first inning to shutout the Loggers 8-0. The Boxers recorded eight extra base hits, five in the first game.
 
The Boxers improve to 6-6 on the season and 3-1 in the Northwest Conference. Puget Sound dropped 0-8 on the season and 0-4 in NWC play.
 
GAME 1
Becca Moen (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) led off the first inning with a triple to right field. She later scored on Marissa Reichard's (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) double to right center. Reichard would score on Jessie Moore's (Fr., Portland, Ore.)  single down the left field line. With two outs, Kylee Oshiro (So., Aiea, Hawaii) doubled to left center to advance pinch runner, Megan Sigler (Fr., Cottonwood, Idaho) to third. Megan Winans (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) doubled to right center to score Sigler and Oshiro to take an early 4-0 lead.
 
Boxer starter, Jenn Yano (So., Ontario, Ore.) pulled herself out of a jam in the second inning. She hit the first batter and walked the second. Puget Sound's Tahni Arndt reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second, but Yano hit Marissa Jeffers to load the bases. Jeffers was called out at first due to interference on a foul ball pop up. Yano struckout Olivia Turner to end the inning.
 
The Boxers scored another run in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Ashley Mitchell (Fr., Redmond, Wash.) drew a walk to score Roberts from third. Oshiro smashed a line drive to left field, but was caught to end the one-run inning.
 
With the Boxer lead 5-1, Reichard started a three-run rally in the fourth inning with a triple to right field. Moore singled to scored Reichard and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by the Loggers. Mitchell scored Moore on a single to left field. With one out, Oshiro was hit by a pitch and Winans singled to center field to load the bases. Oshiro scored the final Boxer run of the game after Puget Sounds starter walked Kylee Yamamoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii).
 
Sara Aasness (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) came in relief for Yano in the fourth to finish the game, striking out three batters. Yano (2-3) allowed just two hits and striking out two in three innings of work. Aasness and Yano combined for their first shutout of the season.
 
Reichard led the Boxers at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double and a triple. Moore and Winans were both 2 for 3, each with two RBIs.
 
GAME 2
The first inning was much the same in the second game as the first as the Boxers scored three runs. Moen started the inning off beating out a ground ball hit to the shortstop. Roberts then singled up the middle to advance Moen two third. Moen and Roberts both scored on the next play as Reichard hit a fly ball to left field, but was dropped. Moore hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Reichard.
 
The Boxers scored three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. With two outs, Reichard doubled to left center. She later stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Loggers catcher. Moore then doubled to right center. Sigler came in to pinch run for Moore and scored on Oshiro's double to left center. Oshiro would score on a dropped fly ball by the shortstop.
 
Two more runs in the fourth capped the scoring for the Boxers. Quirena Natividad (Fr., Waipuha, Hawaii) reached on a fielding error by the Logger's pitcher. Yamamoto singled to left field to advance Natividad to third and herself to second on the throw. Natividad scored on Moen's sacrifice fly to left field. Nalani Antonio (Fr., Kapolei, Hawaii) came in to pinch hit for the Boxers and singled through the right side to score Yamamoto.  
 
Reichard (3-0) went the distance for the Boxers, collecting her third victory of the season and her first shutout. She did not let a Logger batter past second base. She struck out seven batters and walked just one while allowing just two hits. She was also 1 or 3 at the plate with a double.
 
Moore, Moen, Oshiro and Antonio all collected an RBI. Moore was 1 for 1 at the plate, while Moen, Roberts and Oshiro were 1 for 2.
 
The Boxers will travel next weekend to Linfield and return home on Sunday for a doubleheader against Willamette. Both doubleheaders start at noon.
