Boxers Suffer Extra-Inning Doubleheader Loss To Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Over 17 innings on the day, the Pacific softball team pounded out 22 hits, but wasn't enough as Whitworth won 2-1 and 15-14 in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Marks Field.
The Boxers dropped to 10-10 overall and 7-5 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth improved to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in the Northwest Conference.
Becca Moen (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) and
Kaitlyn Shikada (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) led the Boxers at the plate. Moen went 5 for 10 on the day with two RBIs while Shikada went 4 for 8 with an RBI.
Marissa Reichard (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) suffered both losses in the circle.
GAME 1 – Whitworth 2, Pacific 1 (8 innings)
The first game started off as a pitcher's dual between Boxer starter
Shannon Miller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) and Whitworth's Megan Fisher through five and half innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates scored one run to take a 1-0 lead. Jamie Brunner led the inning off with a single, but was out on the next play by a fielder's choice by Bailey Kasler. Two batters later, Julia Johnson doubled to left field to score Kasler.
The Boxers tied the game up in the seventh inning when Shikada singled through the left side.
Kylee Yamamoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) sacrifice bunted
Maddie Collura (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.), who pinch ran for Shikada, to second. Collura later score on Moen's single up the middle.
Whitworth started to come back in the bottom of the seventh. Megan John doubled to left center to start the inning. Caylan Haehl drew a walk. Reichard came in to revlieve Miller to retire the next three batters, sending the game into extra innings.
With another chance to take the lead, the Boxers could not get a runner to score. The Pirates used the bottom of the eighth to pick up the victory. Reichard struck out the first batter, but walked the next. She struck out Johnson to record the second out, but game a triple to Sacha Clow that scored Heather Hesselgesser to win the game.
Moen led the Boxers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Shikada was 2 for 4 while
Kylee Oshiro (So., Aiea, Hawaii) was 1 for 2. Reichard (5-1) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three and walking just one in 1.2 innings of work. Miller allowed one run on six hits while striking out three in six innings of work.
Riley Fritz (6-2) picked up the victory on the circle for the Pirates, allowing just one hit while striking out one in 1.2 innings of work. Starter Megan Fisher allowed one run on five hits while striking out 10 and walking five in 6.1 innings of work.
GAME 2 – Whitworth 15, Pacific 14 (9 innings)
The second game proved to be a slugfest between the two teams. The Boxers started off the game by getting on the board early, scoring seven runs in the first inning and forcing the Pirates to change pitchers. Moen started off the game with a single to left center.
Rachel Roberts (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) doubled to left center to advance Moen to third.
Megan Winans (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) singled to left center to score Moen. Oshiro bunted in Roberts from third and was also safe at first.
Winans later scored on a pass ball. Yamamoto singled to right field to score
Kaylene Sudbeck (So., Caldwell, Idaho), who pinch ran for
Jessie Moore (Fr., Portland, Ore.). Shikada hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Oshiro.
Ashley Mitchell (Fr., Redmond, Wash) doubled to left center to score Yamamoto. Mitchell later scored on Moen's single to the right side.
Seven runs wasn't enough as the Pirates started to chip right back, scoring two in the bottom of the second, but the Boxers responded with three more in the fourth. Roberts drew a walk and scored off of Reichard's double. Reichard would later score on Moore's double to center field and Moore scored on Oshiro's double to left center.
The Pirates came back in the bottom of the fourth to score four runs. Brittany Connor came in to pinch hit and singled to the left side.
Sara Aasness (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) came in to relieve Boxer starter
Jenn Yano (So., Ontario, Ore.). Connor scored on Megan John's infield single. Two more runs scored off of Heather Hesselgesser's single to left field. Their last run of the inning scored off a single to center field.
The Boxers were scoreless until the seventh inning, but Whitworth gained three more runs in the sixth to cut the Boxer lead to 10-9. Miller came in to relieve Aasness in the sixth, but the pitching change didn't effect the Pirates. Reichard came in to relieve Miller to record the final out of the inning.
Four runs in the seventh seemed like it would be enough for the Boxers, but Whitworth battled back to score five in the bottom of seventh to tie the game up 14-14. Yamamoto led off the seventh with a single to left center. Shikada singled to advance Yamamoto to third. Shikada stole second before, scoring on Mitchell's double to left field.
Emmie Moser (Fr., Mt. Vernon, Wash.) drew a walk. Roberts came in to pinch run for Moser and scored on Winans single up the middle which also scored Mitchell.
No offense came from either side in the eighth and the Boxers couldn't get anything going in the top of the ninth. Whitworth came back in the ninth to claim the slugfest victory. Reichard forced the first batter to pop up, but allowed a triple to Whitworth's Riley Fritz. Reichard walked the next two batters to load the bases. She forced the next batter to pop up. Fritz scored on the next play on an error.
Reichard suffered the loss in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits, while striking out three and walking five in three innings of work. The Boxers pounded out 16 hits and six Boxers had two hits. Roberts led the Boxers, going 2 for 3. Winans, Shikada, and Oshiro each went 2 for 4. Winans tallied three RBIs and Oshiro collected two. Mitchell went 2 for 5 with three RBIs while Yamamoto went 2 for 5 with and RBI.
The Boxers will travel down to Willamette this coming Saturday and will return home to play host to Linfield on Sunday. Both doubleheaders start at noon.
