LAST WEEK'S MEET RECAP
LANE PREVIEW
It was a trifecta of top-four finishes for Kelson Kawai (Jr., North Kohala, Hawaii) in all three jumps Saturday to lead the Pacific track and field teams' efforts at the Lane Preview, held at Lane Community College.
Kawai opened the day with a second place finish in the high jump. His mark of 6 feet, 4.75 inches tied his Pacific outdoor career best and equaled his best mark from the indoor season. Kawai tied teammate Jeremy Parkinson (Fr., Hubbard, Ore.) for second place in the triple jump, with both Boxers leaping 43 feet, 9 inches. Kawai finished out the day by tying for fourth in the long jump, qualifying for the Northwest Conference Championship with a mark of 20 feet, 1.5 inches.
The performances of the junior led another very strong day for Pacific jumpers. Trey Oshiro-Atabay (So., Aiea, Hawaii) and
Aaron Koford (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) tied for sixth place, finishing just behind Kawai with efforts of 20 feet, 0.25 inches. Budwesier Hawkins (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) opened his season by qualifying for the NWC meet in the high jump, tying for fourth with a leap of 6 feet, 2.75 inches. PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
LEADING ANOTHER GREAT DAY FOR THE JUMPS: For the second straight week, Kelson Kawai led another exceptional week for the Pacific men's jumpers. Kawai equaled his Pacific lifetime best while tying for second in the high jump at the Lane Preview, clearing 6 feet, 4.75 inches. He also tied for second with Jeremy Parkinson in the triple jump, leaping 43 feet, 9 inches. To cap the day, Kawai proceeded to leap to a NWC Championships qualifying mark in the long jump. He tied for fourth with a mark of 20 feet, 10.5 inches. Kawai enters the week with the league's third best mark in the triple jump, fourth best in the long jump and fifth best in the high jump.
In addition to Kawai efforts, Budweiser Hawkins (So., Las Vegas, Nev.) qualified for the NWC meet in his first high jump competition of the season, clearing 6 feet, 3 inches to tie for fourth place. Trey Oshiro-Atabay and
Aaron Koford tied for sixth in the long jump, with both athletes going 20 feet, 0.5 inches. On the women's side, Roberta Kelley notched a NWC Championships qualifying mark by placing fourth with a mark of 33 feet, 4.75 inches. The performance is No. 4 on Pacific's all-time list at the distance.
A HOPEFUL SIGN OF THINGS TO COME: After missing much of her freshman track season with injuries, Rachel Schreiber (So., Longmont, Colo.) is showing signs for a tremendous sophomore campaign. In her first 1,500 meters of the season at the Lane Preview, Schreiber ran the fourth fastest time in school history as she placed third in a time of 4:53.77. The time ranks as the third best time in the NWC this season and well within striking distance of the NWC best of 4:48.79 ran by Lewis & Clark's Heather Spurling. The 1,500 is Schreiber's second NWC qualifying mark of the season. She also owns the league's best time this season and the ninth best in Division III in the 5,000 meters, a time of 18:36.20 ran at the Mar. 1 Linfield Icebreaker. Schreiber was an All-West Region selection in cross country and qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
MOVING FORWARD IN THE HURDLES: Pacific saw a number of their hurdlers improve on their marks at the Lane Preview. Michael Hunker picked up his NWC Championships qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles after being disqualified the week before, placing 12th in a time of 1:00.04. He also improved his time in the 110-meter hurdles as he placed third in a time of 15.84 seconds. The mark is fourth best in the NWC this season. Daniel Wagner also improved in both disciplines, placing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.07 seconds and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.97 seconds. Nate Farrell (Fr., Warrenton, Ore.) improved in both events as well to conference-qualifying time of 17.29 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and up to 59.11 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. And despite training in the event to prepare for the decathlon,
Aaron Koford ran a NWC Championships qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles of 17.37 seconds. To date, Pacific has qualified five athletes in the 110-meter hurdles and four in the 400-meter event.
ZANE TRAIN: Michael Zane (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) continues to show that he is strong in his comeback from injury. Zane qualified for the NWC Championships in the 200 meters at Saturday's Lane Preview, placing seventh with a time of 23.12 seconds. The mark is the sixth best in the NWC this season entering the week. The 200 was the only event in which Zane competed at the Lane Classic. Zane looked poised to be a contender for NWC championships in both the 100 meters and 200 meters as a freshman before injuries cut the season short. His best of 11.03 seconds ranks No. 7 on the Boxers' all-time list.
ADD SPRINTS: Kelli Aken-Pagdilao improved her season bests in both the 100 meters and 200 meters at the Lane Preview. The junior placed fourth in both events, finishing 13.04 seconds in the 100 meters and 27.08 seconds in the 200 meters. Sean Valente did not improve his time in the men's 400 meters, but finished second in the event with a time of 51.80 seconds.
LINCOLN PARK TO HOST BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Affirming the facility's reputation as a high-caliber venue for track and field, Pacific University's Lincoln Park Stadium will host the 2013 Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place May 8-11. Portland State will be the host school for the meet. The Vikings do not have a track to call their own and evaluated a number of Portland-area venues before settling on Forest Grove and Lincoln Park. The meet was announced in Ken Goe's track and field notebook in Tuesday's edition of The Oregonian. The article can be read at bit.ly/ZxQ6SZ.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS: For the second straight season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships. In 2013, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet. Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
