CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Two hard fought matches ended up being two losses for Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) Friday as the junior found himself eliminated from the 184-pound bracket at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, held at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Malychewski opened the day with what turned into a grinding match with No. 5 seed Roland Dunlap of Wis.-Whitewater.  After neither wrestler scored in the first period, Malychewski was able to compile over a minute of riding time in the second period before Dunlap scored an escape midway through the period.  Malychewski chose the down position for the third round, and Dunlap proceeded to ride out the period to score the 1-0 win.

The loss set up the third showdown of the season between Malychewski and No. 4 seed Mitchell Hagen of St. John's (Minn.), who was upset in the first round.  After neither wrestler scored in first round, Hagen escaped from the down position 15 seconds into the second period and then scored a takedown and two-point nearfall within the last minute of the round.  The points were enough for Hagen to advance with a 5-2 victory.

The two losses ended a tremendous season for Malychewski, who became Pacific's first national meet qualifier in seven seasons.  The junior finished the regular season ranked No. 8 in the 184-pound weight class and placed second at the NCAA West Region Championships, losing in the championship match to Hagen.  He finishes the season with a 30-10 record.
