FOREST GROVE – A day after their disappointing loss at Lewis & Clark, Pacific bounced back in a big way to avenge their loss to Whitworth last month with a 7-2 victory over the Pirates on Saturday in Northwest Conference men's tennis action at the Holce Tennis Courts.
Pacific opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches before receiving straight set victories from the top four singles flights. The dominance gave the Boxers a measure of revenge after losing to Pirates in Spokane, 6-3, back on Feb. 23.
“We couldn't have asked for a better bounce-back match today,” said Pacific Director of Tennis
Brian Jackson. “We put together a full team match and successfully took the season point. It was just what we needed.”
After losing their last two matches, Pacific's No. 1 doubles tandem of
Troy Zuroske (Jr., Richland, Wash.) and
Giancarlo Battaglia (So., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) returned to the win column with an 8-0 shutout of Drew Bingham and Cameron Williams.
Alen Suklje (So., Portland, Ore.) and
Kolin Wong (Sr., Captain Cook, Hawaii) came through a close match to beat Chris Engelmann and Micah Spaun, 8-6 at No. 2.
Brandon Schlack (So., Long Beach, Calif.) and
David Yanagita (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over Blake Miller and Troy Patterson at No. 3.
Schlack opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Engelmann at No. 3 and Battaglia secured the team victory for the Boxers with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Brigham in the No. 2 flight. Zuroske added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Williams at No. 1 and Suklje was a 6-0, 7-6 (1) winner over Miller at No. 4. John Talbot and Matt Goebel picked up Whitworth's lone wins. Talbot was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Wong at No. 5 and Goebel scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Yanagita at No. 6.
Pacific continues a three-game home stand on Friday when they host Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m.
