Hanson, Boxers Use Second Game To Split With Bearcats

SALEM, Ore. –
Chloe Hanson (So., Trail, Ore.) came into the second game as a relief to only allow one hit to go along with 15 hits for the Pacific softball team, forcing a doubleheader split with Willamette. The Boxers lost the first game 12-10, but came back to win the second 14-7 on Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference action at Willamette's softball field.
Hanson pitched 2.2 innings in the second game, coming in to relieve, Boxer starter,
Shannon Miller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.). Hanson faced eight batters and tallied two strikeouts to collect the victory in the circle, her first of the season.
After winning the second game, the Boxers improved to 11-11 overall and 8-6 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
GAME 1 – Willamette 12, Pacific 10
The Boxers hit three home runs in the first game, but wasn't enough to secure the victory. The Boxers were on the board early in the first inning. With two outs,
Megan Winans (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) blasted a two-run bomb to right-center, her fourth of the season.
Rachel Roberts (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) had previously singled up the middle and stole second.
In the top of the third inning, the Boxers added one run. With one out,
Becca Moen (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) doubled to left field. Roberts then singled and advanced Moen to third.
Marissa Reichard (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) singled through the left side to score Moen.
The Bearcats got to Boxer starter Reichard and scored nine runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-3 lead. Kelli Snyder hit a two RBI double to start the scoring. Courtney Galli had a two RBi single to add two more runs and take a 4-3 lead. Allison Martin singled on the next play to score two more Bearcats.
Sara Aasness (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) came in the game to relieve Reichard. Aasness forced the first batter she faced to fly out, but gave up a single to the next batter for another Bearcats run.
The Boxers added three more runs in the fourth after
Ashley Mitchell (Fr., Redmond, Wash.) grounded out to the shortstop to score
Kylee Oshiro (So., Aiea, Hawaii). Moen blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to cut the Bearcat lead to 9-6, Moen's first home run of the season.
Jessie Moore (Fr., Portland, Ore.) homered in the fifth inning, her third home run of the season, to bring the Boxers within one. The Boxers added two more in the sixth to take a 10-9 lead. Moen started the inning with a single up the middle. Reichard singled to right field to advance Moen to second. Moore came up big again, hitting a double down the left field line to score Reichard and Moen.
Willamette came back in the sixth two score three runs to claim the victory. Erin Norris singled to tie the game up at 10-10. Courtney Galli also collected an RBI to take the lead. Allison Martin grounded out to first base to score Yvonne Drabin.
Aasness took the loss in the circle allowing four runs on six hits. Reichard led the Boxers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Moen went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Moore went 2 for 4 with four RBIs while Roberts went 2 for 4.
GAME 2 – Pacific 14, Willamette 7
The Boxers were on the board early again in the first inning. With one out, Roberts doubled down the left field line. She then scored on Reicard's double to left center to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, the Boxers added four more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Moen put a bunt down and was safe at first to start the rally. Roberts reached on a fielding error, advancing Moen to second. Reichard singled to load the bases. Moen then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. On the next play, Moore hit a sacrifice fly to score Roberts and advance the runners. Oshiro singled to first base to score Reichard. Winans would score on
Kylee Yamamoto's (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) single through the left side.
Boxer starter,
Shannon Miller, did not allow a run until the third inning. The Bearcats scored four runs to come back within one run, but the Boxers scored six runs in the fourth to gain a 11-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Hanson came in the game to relieve Miller in the fourth inning. She gave up a single to the first batter she face. The Bearcats tried to get two runs out of the single, but Moen gunned down the second runner from center field. Hanson retired the next batter to end the inning.
The Boxers added one more in the fifth off a Winans single through the right side that scored Reichard. They capped their scoring in the seventh, scoring two runs before the game was called due to rainy weather conditions.
Moen started the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by the second baseman, but was out on the next play by a fielder's choice from Roberts. Roberts stole second and scored on Reichard's double to left field. Reichard later scored on Moore's single to left field.
Reichard led the Boxers at the plate, going a perfect 5 for 5 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Moore went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Winans and Oshiro each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Hanson collected the victory in the circle, tallying two strikeouts and allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings of work.
The Boxers return home on Sunday to play host to No. 9 Linfield. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
