BOXERS BUILD WIN STREAK AS BRADLEY ENTERS 300 CLUB
The Pacific baseball team's three-game series at Lewis & Clark could not have come at a better time as the Boxers swept three games from the Pioneers and gave Head Coach
Greg Bradley his 300th career victory. Pacific will now test their four-game win streak with a string of non-conference contests. The Boxers host Corban on Wednesday before traveling south for a three-game series with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday and Sunday and a single game next Monday against Whittier.
BOXER BYTES
• Pacific turned three Lewis & Clark errors into 11 runs in the second inning of Saturday's opener with Lewis & Clark as the Boxers gave
Rob Dittrick his first win of the year and Head Coach
Greg Bradley his 300th win with a 19-3 rout of the Pioneers.
• The Pioneers built a 2-1 lead in Saturday's nightcap before rain forced the game to be continued to Sunday. When it did,
Kyle Treadway did not allow another L&C runner past first base as the Boxers went on to the 7-2 win.
•
Matt Delegato then threw his second straight complete game in Sunday's regularly scheduled game while
Walker Olis went 3 for 5 and had a three-run homer as the Boxers completed the series sweep with a 5-1 win. Delegato allow just one run while striking out eight.
•
Walker Olis went 6 for 10 in the three-game series to lead the Boxers with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. He lifted his batting average to .494, ranking third in the NWC. He also ranks third in the league with a .536 on-base percentage and fifth with a .617 slugging percentage.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CORBAN
The NAIA Warriors enter the week with a 15-9 record. The Warriors are coming off a weekend where they split four non-conference games with University of Antelope Valley of Lancaster, Calif. Corban took the sandwich seven-inning game 4-3, scoring three of their four runs in the second on a two-run double by Kyle Kunkel and a RBI single by Jordan Johansen. Antelope Valley won the third game 8-3 as they scored seven runs over the first three innings. Corban came back to win the final game of the series on Saturday, 10-7, and did most of their damage in a seven-run first inning. The Stags saw a 2-1 lead in the opener dissolve when La Verne scored one in the fifth and six in the seventh inning. Scott Witte went 2 for 3 to lead Claremont. PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
GREG BRADLEY GETS WIN NO. 300 AND THEN SOME: Pacific Head Coach
Greg Bradley reached a milestone on Saturday, becoming just the second coach in program history to amass 300 wins. The Boxers gave their skipper No. 300 in explosive style, beating Lewis & Clark in Saturday's opener 19-3. The winningest active coach in Northwest Conference baseball went on to earn wins No. 301 and 302 with the sweep of the games with the Pioneers on Sunday. Bradley is in his 18th season as Pacific head coach, taking over for the 1996 season. He began at Pacific in 1993 as an assistant coach under the winningest coach in program history, Pacific Hall of Famer Chuck Bafaro. In his tenure, Bradley has led the Boxers to 20-win seasons six times, topped by the 2012 NWC championship squad. In addition to his head coaching duties, Bradley also works as Pacific's athletic facilities manager.
WALKER WIELDING WILD BAT: Walker Olis (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) continues to put up impressive numbers at the plate for the Boxers and continues to lead the team as a freshman. Olis went 6 for 10 during the three-game Lewis & Clark series with two doubles, a home run, three runs and seven RBIs. Olis went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs in the 19-3 rout on Saturday and had one hit in the rain-suspended game completed on Sunday. He then punctuated the series by going 3 for 5 in the 5-1 win on Sunday, which included four RBIs and his second home run of the season. Olis enters the week leading the Boxers and ranking third in the NWC with a .447 batting average. He also ranks third in the league with a .536 on-base percentage and fifth with a .617 slugging percentage, leading the Boxers in both categories. His two home runs also ties Olis for fourth in the NWC and also owns a 14-game hitting streak.
TWO COMPLETE GAMES IN A ROW: Starting pitcher
Matt Delegato (Sr., Hillsboro, Ore.) has emerged over the last couple of weeks as a player who can be dominant on the mound. Over the last two weekends, Delegato has pitched two complete games and has allowed one run on 15 hits and struck out 13 batters. Delegato helped Pacific complete the series sweep of Lewis & Clark on Sunday, allowing one run on eight hits and had a Pacific season-high eight strikeouts. Breaking into the starting rotation for the first time this season, Delegato now has a 2-1 record and a team-low 1.80 earned run average, which ranks sixth in the NWC. In 30 innings, he has allowed just seven runs, six earned, on 30 hits with 17 strikeouts.
ADD COMPLETE GAMES: With as impressive as
Matt Delegato's complete games have been,
Kyle Treadway's (So., Phoenix, Ore.) complete game in the Lewis & Clark series was just as impressive by the fact that it was stretched out over two days. Treadway went the distance in the rain suspended 7-2 win that started Saturday and ended Sunday. After allowing two runs in the first inning, he did not allow a runner past first base in the final eight. He allowed the two runs, one earned, on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. It was the first win of the season for Treadway in five starts and lowered his earned run average to 3.34. The sophomore has allowed 18 runs, 11 earned, on 35 hits in 31.1 innings and has struck out 11.
COMING AROUND AFTER THE SLOW START: After a slow start that has been typical of each of his First Team All-NWC seasons,
Rob Dittrick (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) appears to have worked his way back into dominant form. Dittrick earned his first win of the season in Saturday's opener at Lewis & Clark, In six innings of work, Dittrick allowed just one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts. The win lowered Dittrick's earned run average to 2.53 and his opponent's batting average to .295. Dittrick has five starts this season, but has only earned decisions during his three NWC contests.
ANOTHER YOUNG BAT HITTING WELL: While his production has dropped off from his hot start,
Charlie Gaff (Fr., Stockton, Calif.) continues to be a critical part of the Boxers' offensive successes. Gaff went 5 for 12 in the three-game series with Lewis & Clark, which was topped by a pair of 2 for 4 performances in Saturday's opener and Sunday's nightcap. Gaff enters the week with a .277 batting average. He has started all but one game for the Boxers this season in center field.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP AT THE DISH: With the younger bats doing their part to keep Pacific in games,
Logan Moen (Sr., Brier, Wash.) has also been showing some pop at the plate. The senior infielder went 4 for 12 in the Lewis & Clark series, which included three RBIs. Saturday's opener was Moen's best effort as he went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs in the Boxers' 19-3 rout. Moen has started 14 of the Boxers' 15 games, with the majority of his starts at either first or third base, He enters the week with a .286 batting average.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Despite the two losses over the weekend, Chuck Bafaro Stadium continues to be kind to the Boxers. Pacific finished the weekend with as 26-9 record on their home field since 2010. Chuck Bafaro Stadium were indeed friendly confines for the Boxers in their 2012 championship season as they went 15-3 at home. It helped that Pacific played all of their March games at home, which included five games moved to Forest Grove due to unplayable field conditions. The home schedule will be much less fruitful for the Boxers in 2013 with just 13 games slated for Chuck Bafaro Stadium, of of which will come in conference series.
SELECT SCHEDULE OF WEB STREAMED GAMES ON TAP: For the first time, Pacific will provide a live video web stream 11 of the team's 13 home games. The video feed will provide a view of the field from the press box without audio commentary. Games could be added or removed from the schedule depending on weather cancellations or relocations.
