Starting Pitchers Stand Out As Boxers, Stags Split

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pacific and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps traded a pair of standout pitching performances Saturday as the two teams split their baseball doubleheader at Arce Field.
Rob Dittrick (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) threw eight innings of a seven-hit shutout in the opener, which the Pacific offense backed up with a four-run eighth inning for a 5-0 victory. Claremont's Andor Kesselman proved the star in the second game, throwing a complete-game three-hitter to give the Stags a 7-0 shutout.
Walker Olis (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) led the Boxers offensively by going 2 for 4 in the opener with two runs, two RBIs and two triples, but saw a 16-game hitting streak snapped when he went 0 for 3 in the nightcap.
Donnie Bradley (So., Beaverton, Ore.) was the only Pacific player to have hits in both games.
GAME 1 – PACIFIC 5, CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS 0
Dittrick put together his best outing of the season so far to improve to 2-2 on the season. In eight innings, he allowed six hits, walked no one and struck out six. He allowed just one batter past second base.
Nick Morton (Fr., Burbank, Calif.) allowed one hit to close it in the ninth as he pitched in front of a hometown crowd.
The game shaped up to be a pitcher's duel over the first six innings with Claremont starter Clayton Brock allowing the Boxers just one hit during the stretch. Olis opened scoring for Pacific in second, hitting a lead-off triple to right field and scored when pinch-hitter
Ben Duerr (Fr., Lebanon, Ore.) reached based on a catcher's interference call.
Dan Jaffe (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) led off the eighth inning with a walk and scored on
Charlie Gaff's (Fr., Stockton, Calif.) double. Olis followed with his second triple of the game, which brought home Gaff and
Michael Arakaki (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii). Olis then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Trux French (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.).
Brock took the loss for Claremont, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings. He dropped to 0-5 on the season. Dustin Green went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Stags.
GAME 2 – CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS 7, PACIFIC 0
It was Kesselman who shined on the mound in the nightcap for the Stags, allowing just three hits one walk while striking out 12 for his second win of the season. He allowed just two Pacific runners past second base, with those coming in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Claremont offense backed up their pitcher from the start. Scott Witte hit a two-double in the first and then plated on Brett Watanabe's single to left. Brian Bartlett led off the three-run fifth with a double and he and Jack Witte scored on Watanabe's two-run single down the left field line. Scott Witte added the third run by walking and scoring on a bases loaded walk.
Watanabe added two runs for the Stags in the seventh with a home run and then plated their lone run in the eighth when his fielder's choice scored William Knowles.
Kyle Treadway (So., Phoenix, Ore.) took the loss for the Boxers and fell to 1-5 on the season. He allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Watanabe went 3 for 5 with the home run and six RBIs to lead the Stags offensively.
The Boxers and Stags will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
