PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) closed in on the Pacific record in the men's 5,000 meters and ran one of the top times in the nation Saturday, leading the Pacific track and field teams at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open, held at the Eldon Fix Track.
 
Shipley was a winner in the race by nearly nine seconds, finishing in 15:00.47.  The effort ranks as the second fastest time in school history behind the 14:36.8 run by Roger Hansen in 1976.  The effort also ranks as the 17th fastest time run by a Division III athlete this season.
 
The freshman's winning performance led 11 Pacific athletes to finish in the top-eight in their respective events.  Kelson Kawai (Jr., North Kohala, Hawaii) and Budweiser Hawkins (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) tied for second place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.  Hawkins also placed third in the long jump with a season best 21 feet, 11 inches, while Kawai was sixth in the triple jump at 42 feet, 8 inches.
 
Trey Oshiro-Atabay (So., Aiea, Hawaii) finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 7.5 inches and Jeremy Parkinson (Fr., Hubbard, Ore.) finished seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches.
 
Women's sprinter Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Jr., Makakilo, Hawaii) came close to eclipsing her own record in the 100 meters, finishing fourth in a time of 12.76 seconds.  She also placed fourth in the 200 meters with a season best of 26.27 seconds.  In the men's sprints, the 1,600-meter relay team of Spencer Wilson (So., La Pine, Ore.), Stefan Lemak (Fr., Los Altos, Calif.), Oshiro-Atabay and Sean Valente (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii)placed second in a time of 3:27.77.
 
In the men's hurdles, Daniel Wagner (So., Kailua, Hawaii) finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.80 seconds while Michael Hunker (Sr., Cornelius, Ore.) finished sixth in 16.05 seconds.
 
Mackenzie Huddleston (Fr., Milwaukie, Ore.) led Pacific's efforts in the throws, placing fourth in the women's javelin with a season best 113 feet, 9 inches.  Aaron Koford (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) placed sixth in the men's discus with an effort of 126 feet, 9 inches, while Tim Claussen (Fr., Yamhill, Ore.) placed eighth with a mark of 125 feet, 10 inches.
 
Pacific will return to action next Saturday, competing at the Peyton Scoring Meet at the University of Puget Sound's Peyton Field.
