Balanced Effort From Entire Lineup Gives Boxers Win Over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – A day after a tough, but well played loss to nationally ranked Middlebury, Pacific received a balanced effort from all across the lineup to beat Caltech, 8-1, in men's tennis action on Tuesday at the Braun Tennis Courts.
 
“This was a very good team win today,” said Pacific Director of Tennis Brian Jackson.  “We played well up and down the line.  It was good to see us bring our energy and keep it up throughout the match.”
 
The Boxers (6-8) opened the competition with a sweep in doubles.  Troy Zuroske (Jr., Richland, Wash.) and Giancarlo Battaglia (So., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) pulled through a tough match with Luka Mernik and Devashish Joshi at No. 1, sweeping their way through a tiebreaker for the 9-8 (7-0) win.  Alen Suklje (So., Beaverton, Ore.) and Kolin Wong (Sr., Captain Cook, Hawaii) cruised to an 8-2 win over Amol Kamat and Ishan Mehta at No. 2 while Lorne Bulling (Fr., Corvallis, Ore.) and Brian Kyaw (Fr., South San Francisco, Calif.) took an 8-3 win over Dylan Schultz and Rushikesh Joshi at No. 3.
 
Battaglia led the way in singles by improving to 11-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Devashish Joshi at No. 1.  Zuroske added a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rushikesh Joshi at No. 2 while Suklje college the 6-4, 6-2 win over Mernik at No. 3.  Brandon Schlack (So., Long Beach, Calif.) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Alex Henny at No. 4 and Wong was a 6-0, 6-2 win over JD Co-Reyes at No. 6.
 
Caltech's (0-12) lone win came by way of retirement.  Kyaw trailed 3-0 in the first set of his No. 5 match with Amol Kamat when he was forced to retire due to injury.
 
Pacific will conclude their Southern California trip on Thursday as they face Occidental in Los Angeles.
