Koford Stands Sixth After Day One Of NWC Decathlon

TACOMA, Wash. – Aaron Koford (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) is in sixth place in the decathlon, but remains well in position for a top-four finish after the first day of the Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships, held Monday at the Pacific Lutheran University track.
 
Koford compiled a total of 2,955 points amidst cold and sometimes breezy conditions in the Puget Sound region.  The total is about 200 points short of Koford's first day total at March's Boxer Combined Event in Forest Grove.  He stands 71 points behind fifth place Joe Cerne of Puget Sound and 137 points behind fourth place Cameron Brathwaite of Puget Sound.
 
Teammate Ted Wogan (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) finished the first day in eighth place with a score of 2,789 points, which is 39 points better than his first day in the Boxer Combined Event.
 
Koford's best performance came in the shot put, tying for second place with Whitworth's Peter Delap with an effort of 34 feet, 10.25 inches.  He opened the day with a fifth place finish in the 100 meters in 11.72 seconds and then placed fourth in the long jump with an effort of 19 feet, 9 inches.  Koford then tied for seventh in the fourth event, the high jump, at 5 feet, 1.75 inches and finished sixth in the 400 meters in 52.74 seconds.
 
Wogan's best performance of the day also came in the shot put where he placed fifth with an effort of 33 feet, 2.5 inches.  Wogan was tied for sixth in the 100 meters in the 100 meters in 11.90 seconds and eighth in the long jump at 17 feet, 11 inches.  He tied for seventh in the high jump with Koford at 5 feet, 1.75 inches and was seventh in the 400 meters in 52.93 seconds.
 
Delap owns the first day lead with 3,371 points, just 31 points ahead of second place Carson Kennedy of Willamette.  Delap took first place finishes in the long jump and high jump and second place finishes in the 100 meters and shot put.
 
Action will continue on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m., with decathletes contesting the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.  Points gained from this event will count towards team totals towards the NWC Track and Field Championships.
