NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Kelson Kawai (Jr., North Kohala, Hawaii) will have to wait and see if he can make the field of 18 athletes in the men's high jump for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships after a lengthy weather delay made for a challenging day at the Gregory Final Qualifier, held at North Central College's Benedetti-Wherli Stadium.

A rain delay kept Kawai and other competitors from getting a solid start in the competition and the junior managed the day finishing in a tie for ninth place, clearing 6 feet. 2.75 inches.  The weather limited the entire field with the winner, North Central's Zach Heerspink, clearing just 6 feet, 8 inches.

Now Kawai must wait to see how many athletes will declare in the men's high jump for next week's national meet in La Crosse, Wis.  He entered the competition tied with seven other jumpers for 19th on the national best list with a best of 6 feet, 8 inches, which tied the Pacific school record.  Selections for the national meet will be announced on Monday.

"Kelson had a great season and now we will wait and see if Kelson's mark will get him invited," said Pacific Head Track and Field Coach Tim Boyce.  "It will be close.  Nonetheless, we made every effort and we have no regrets.  The best is yet to come for the Boxers!"

Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) came back from a lifetime best performance in the 5,000 meters Thursday to race in the 1,500 meters on Friday.  Running on tired legs, he placed 34th in a time of 4:10.76 to conclude his season.
