Boxers Show Preview Of The Future In Baseball Finales

TACOMA, Wash. – Playing in a pair of “Future's Games” that showed their look to come, Pacific closed out the 2013 season with a non-conference split against a pair of Northwest Conference rivals Saturday in baseball action at Logger Field.
 
In the opener, Pacific score six of their seven runs in the first two including, including a four-run third keyed by Colin McCusker's (So., Olympia, Wash.) two-run double, as the Boxers went on to the 7-6 win over Whitman.  Pacific also scored first in their finale against Puget Sound, but the Loggers roared back to score four in the fourth and three in the fifth en route to a 9-4 win.
 
Ben Duerr (Fr., Lebanon, Ore.) and Austin Gallagher (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) each had four hits on the afternoon to lead the Boxers.  Duerr went 3 for 3 in the opener with three runs scored while Gallagher went 3 for 5 with a RBI and a run in the nightcap.
 
With the games, Pacific concludes their season with a 17-23 overall record.
 
PACIFIC 7, WHITMAN 6
Whitman opened scoring with one run in the first.  Kyle Buckham was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ozzy Braff's sacrifice fly to left.
 
Pacific responded in kind with two runs in the bottom of the first.  Duerr reached with a one-out single, stole second and scored on Gallagher's double down the left field line.  Dan Jaffe (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) traded places with Gallagher, hitting a second double down the line.
 
Duerr opened the four-run third with a single to right field.  Whitman starter Dakota Matherly then issued two walks to load the bases for Therone Bridges (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.), who singled through the left side to score Duerr.  Nathan Suyematsu (Fr., Tualatin, Ore.) then took a bases loaded walk and McCusker followed with his two-run double down the left field line.
 
Whitman (16-22) came back to tie it in the sixth to prevent Jimmy Brakebush (Fr., Portland, Ore.) from picking up his third win in a row.  Chris Andrews reached on an error to start the inning, Buckham followed with a single and both scored on Braff's double to left center field.  Aaron Cohen reached when he was hit by a pitch and Cameron Young brought home two with a triple to right center field.  Young would score on a sacrifice fly.
 
Duerr scored the Boxer's winning run in the seventh, leading off the frame with a double to right center field and advancing to third on an error.  He would then score on Walker Olis' (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) sacrifice fly.
 
Kyle Treadway (Fr., Phoenix, Ore.) picked up his second win of the season in relief, allowing two hits and two strikeouts in three innings of work.  Craig Nesselhuf (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) earned his third save of the year, allowing one hit in the ninth.  Brakebush allowed six run, four earned, on four hits in five innings of work.
 
Justin Weeks took the loss for Whitman in relief, dropping to 4-6 on the year.  He allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.  Seven different Missionaries' hitters finished with one hit each.
 
PUGET SOUND 9, PACIFIC 4
It was Duerr again who would start the Pacific scoring against the Loggers, reaching on a one-out double to center field and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gallagher.
 
The Loggers (17-23) would score their first runs and take the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning.  Jeff Walton, Bobby Hosmer and Nathan Backes strung together three one-out singles, with Backes bringing home Walton.  Nick Funyak walked to load the bases and Stephen Kelsey scored a pair on his single down the right field line.  Funyak came home on a squeeze bunt.
 
Funyak started off the Puget Sound fifth with a RBI double down the left field line and Kelsey followed with a two-run single up the middle.  The Loggers tacked on two more in the seventh on a double by Funyak and a single by JB Eary.
 
Pacific put together a late rally with three runs over the final two innings.  The Boxers loaded the bases in the eighth with a walk to Frenando Careaga (Fr. Tucson, Ariz.), a single by Gallagher and a hit batter.  Careaga scored on a fielder's choice and Gallagher scored by way of an error.  Nick Garrett (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) plated the Boxers' ninth inning run when his single scored McCusker.
 
Nick Morton (Fr., Burbank, Calif.) was collared for the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the season.  He allowed seven runs on 10 hits with two walks in 4.2 innings of work.  Nathan Aguiar earned his fourth win of the year for the Loggers, allowing one unearned run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings of work.  Gallagher's three hits led the Boxers while Garrett and Kevin Bettencourt (Fr., Modesto, Calif.) each had two hits.  Hosmer led Puget Sound with a 3 for 4 afternoon.
