Boxers' Hitting Goes Thin In Rocky Mountain Air
Box Score
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Going five sets in the opening match in the thin Colorado air took some pop out of Pacific Friday afternoon as the Boxers fell in three sets to Augsburg, 25-9, 25-18, 25-12, in their second match of the Molten Colorado College Invitational at Reid Arena.
Â
Where the Boxers (0-2) look strong in the opening sets earlier in the day against Central (Iowa), the Boxers struggled to build any momentum. Pacific hit -.131 for the match, committing 33 attack errors in the process. The Auggies (2-0), meanwhile, rolled to hit .262 for the afternoon and .375 in the opening frame.
Â
Jamie Steach (Fr., Pasco, Wash.) and
Marie Rewick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) each had four kills to lead the Boxers. Steach also had five assists while
Becky Sheller (So., Gresham, Ore.) added 10 digs.
Â
Colleen Ourada led Augsburg (2-0) with 12 kills while Ashley Peper had eight. Emily McCourt added 26 assists and Katelyn Berens finished with 18 digs.
Â
Pacific opened the match with a 1-0 lead, but struggled from there as they failed to score off of their own serve. The Auggies capitalized on a string of errors to build a 10-3 lead and then extended it to 15-5 on a Ourada kill. Errors fueled another 6-0 run for the Auggies that all but closed out the 25-9 win.
Â
Augsburg led from start to finish in the second set, opening up a 14-5 lead on Ourada's sixth kill of the match. Pacific pulled back to within 18-11 on an Augsburg attack error, but would come no closer as an attack error gave the Auggies the 25-18 win.
Â
Augsburg opened the third set on an 8-0 run, fueled in part by three Emily McCourt service aces. Pacific scored four points off their own serve, but could not come closer in the 25-12 loss.
Pacific finishes up their Colorado road trip on Saturday with two more matches at the Molten Colorado College Invitational. The Boxers play UMass-Boston at 4 p.m. (MDT), followed by a back-to-match with tournament host and No. 17 ranked Colorado College. Augsburg will play Central (Iowa) at 10 a.m. followed by Colorado College 2 p.m.
