COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – An early two-set lead was not enough for Pacific to prevail in their 2013 volleyball opener Friday as Central (Iowa) came back to defeat the Boxers in five sets, 16-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-10, in the opening match of the Molten Colorado College Invitational at Reid Arena.

The Boxers (0-1) used solid hitting and took advantage of 13 Central attack errors to win the first two sets.  The Dutch (1-0) hit their stride in the third and fourth sets before hitting an impressive .318 in the deciding frame to win it.

Marie Rewick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) led Pacific in the opener with a double-double of 18 kills and 24 digs while Lauren Goss (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) added 10 kills.  Emily Farnham (So., University Place, Wash.) finished with 24 assists while libero Becky Sheller (So., Gresham, Ore.) had 29 digs.

Jessica Laflin led Central at the net with 14 kills and Hannah Welter added 10.  Claire Stewart finished with a double-double of 24 assists and 13 digs.

Pacific clearly like the team betted acclimated to the 6,035-foot elevation in the first set, opening up a 6-2 lead on Jamie Steach's (Fr., Pasco, Wash.) first kill as a Boxer.  The advantage inched up to 13-7 on a Dutch setting error while a string of two attack errors and a Rewick kill put the Boxers ahead 20-11.  Another attack error would close it out in the Boxers' favor in the 25-16 win.

Central found new life in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead on Dzenita Bahtic's service ace.  The Boxers climb back into the frame, tying it at 11-11 on Mariah McHolland's (Sr., Renton, Wash.) kill and took their first lead, 17-16, on Una Artea's (Fr., Kent, Wash.) kill.

The Dutch battled back to take a 23-21 lead late before the Boxers won the final four rallies to win the set.  A block from McHolland and Hannah Herbert (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) tied it at 23-23.  Emily Farnham (So., University Place, Wash.) added an ace and McHolland closed it out with a kill for the narrow 25-23 win.

Pacific bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the third frame thanks to a Farnham ace and a McHolland kill and built a 15-11 lead on a ball-handling error.  The Dutch, however, roared back to take a 17-16 lead on Sara Snead's kill.  The Dutch advantage was never more than three points, but it proved enough as Central held off a late comeback with an Emily Stoakes kill for the 25-23 win.

Central pulled away late in the fourth set to force the tiebreaker, building a 23-17 cushion on a Pacific attack error en route to the 25-21 win.  Pacific held a narrow advantage in the fifth, going ahead 9-7 on a pair of McHolland kills.  Tori Zempel followed by serving Central to four winners for a 12-10 lead before Stewart and Snead closed out with kills for the win.

Pacific continues at the Molten Colorado College Invitational this afternoon at 4 p.m. (MDT), taking on Augsburg on Minneapolis, Minn.  Central continues play at 2 p.m. (MDT) as they play host Colorado College.
