Rewick's 17 Kills Not Enough As Cobbers Shuck Boxers
Box Score
TACOMA, Wash. – A 17-kill performance and the four double-double performance of the season for
Marie Rewick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) was not enough for Pacific to get past a solid Concordia-Moorhead team as the Cobbers husked the Boxers in three sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20, in volleyball action at Pacific Lutheran University's Olson Auditorium.
Â
Rewick finished the night with a silky 17 kills and 11 digs to pace a night that saw the Boxers (1-6) hit .135 on the evening.Â
Una Areta (Fr., Kent, Wash.) came off the bench for nine kills while
Mariah McHolland (Sr., Renton, Wash.) added seven kills.Â
Emily Farnham (So., University Place, Wash.) finished with 29 assists and
Becky Sheller (So., Gresham, Ore.) had 18 digs.
Â
Kayla Hampton stalked a balanced Concordia offensive attack with 10 kills. Olivia Wangensteen, Kelly Reed and Anna Skow-Anderson each had eight kills. Mandy Mercil and Jena Klaphake each registered 21 assists.  Alyssa Schmidt kept her defensive ear tuned well, leading the Cobbers defensively with 19 digs.
Â
The Cobbers provided the Boxers a sour mash early in the first set, popping out to an 8-3 lead on a kill by Hampton. The Boxers came back to within 8-6 on Areta's first kill of the night and managed to stay within three points until Wangensteen served the Cobbers to three winners, two on Pacific attack errors for a 21-13 advantage. The eight-point edged as Reed and Kynndyl Ross came up with a block to take the 25-17 win.
Â
Concordia did their best to cream Pacific early in the second set, going up 7-2 on a pair of kills by Skow-Anderson. The Boxers rallied to reduce the deficit to 11-9 on Farnham's dump. Concordia built their lead back to 23-19 on a Hampton kill, but Rewick oiled her way to two kills and a block to bring the Boxers within 23-22. Ross responded with a kill and the Boxers coughed up an attack error to complete the close 25-22 win for the Cobbers.
Â
Pacific had a kernel of hope early in the third set with the Boxers taking a 6-4 lead on a Concordia attack error. But the Cobbers milled their way back, going ahead 8-7 on a Hampton block and eventually taking a 13-8 lead on a pair of Skow-Anderson kills. Pacific kept their futures sweet by coming within 20-18 on an attack error, but late kills by Wangensteen and Skow-Anderson and a Hampton service ace harvested the sweep for Concordia.
Â
Pacific returns to the home fields, hoping to farm a win in their Northwest Conference opener on Wednesday, hosting George Fox at 7 p.m.
