Boxers' Offensive Attack Cut Short By Defending Champs

TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran provided little chance for Pacific to mount much of an offensive attack Friday night as the No. 18 Lutes jousted past the Boxers in three sets, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at Olson Auditorium.

The defending champion Lutes (5-4, 1-0 NWC) limited the Boxers to just a total of 19 points off of their own serve in the three sets while amassing a .195 hitting percentage. Pacific was allowed just 20 kills while finishing with a .043 hitting percentage.

Marie Reick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) led Pacific (2-7, 11-1 NWC) with eight kills while
Una Areta (Fr., Kent, Wash.) came off the bench for seven kills.Â
Emily Farnham (So., University Place, Wash.) added eight assists while
Becky Sheller (So., Gresham, Ore.) finished with 11 digs.

Lucy Capron led Pacific Lutheran with a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs. She was the only player for either team to register double-digit kills. Amber Aguiar finished with 21 digs while Samantha North added 38 assists.

Pacific found themselves down 6-1 early in the first set after the Lutes scored five consecutive points off Haley Urdahl's serve. The Boxers rallied back to within 9-6 on a pair of attack errors, but PLU stretched the advantage to 17-9 on a Bethany Huston block. The lead held as a kill by Urdahl finished off the 25-16 win.

The Lutes opened the second set with a 4-0 lead, with two points coming off of Huston kills. PLU went up 14-6 on a Urdahl kill and Capron hit an ace to make a 10-point lead, 23-13, before Ariana Judson had her lone kill of the night to take the 25-15 win.

The Boxers started down 3-0 in the third set, but battled back to within 4-2 on
Hannah Smargiassi's (So., Tualatin, Ore.) kill. But the Lutes went up 9-3 on another four-point run, two coming on Pacific attack errors. PLU would eventually extend the lead to 23-15 before closing out the 25-18 frame.

Pacific returns home to the Stoller Center to host the eastern Washington schools next weekend. The Boxers host Whitman on Friday at 7 p.m., and Whitworth on Saturday at 5 p.m.
