BOXERS HOPE TO BUILD MOMENTUM AGAINST THE WHITS
Afrer splitting their opening matches of the 2013 Northwest Conference season, the Pacific volleyball team hopes to build some positive momentum as they host the eastern Washington schools.  The Boxers welcome a much-improved Whitman squad on Friday before Whitworth visits the Stoller Center on Saturday.

BOXER BYTES
• Marie Rewick posted a 20-kill performance to lead the Boxers to a win in their NWC opener Wednesday as Pacific downed George Fox in four sets, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18.  Pacific hit .190 for match, their second best team performance of the season.

• Pacific found their offensive performance stunted by a very good No. 18 Pacific Lutheran squad on Friday as the Lutes limited the Boxers to just 19 points off of their own serve in a three-set loss, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.  Marie Rewick led the Boxers with eight kills while Una Areta came off the bench for seven kills.

• Marie Rewick enters the week as the conference and team leader in kills, averaging 4.12 kills per set.  She has 28 kills in the Boxers' two matches last week, including 20 kills in the victory over George Fox.

• Una Areta has performed well at outside hitter in a reserve role for the Boxers.  She ranks second for the Boxers with 70 kills and 2.06 kills per set.  She ranks 18th among NWC players in kills per set.

• Libero Becky Sheller enters the week ranked fifth in the NWC in digs, averaging 5.18 digs per set.  Her 25 digs against Geoerge Fox on Wednesday was her third best performance of the season.

• Setter Emily Farnham has established herself as the starter for the Boxers, having started seven of the team's nine matches.  She enters the week ranked sixth in the NWC with her average of 6.54 assists per set.

• Pacific is once again showing a preference for marathon matches.  Four of the Boxers' nine matches this season have gone longer than three matches and three have gone the full five sets.  During 2012, Pacific saw 13 of their 24 matches go longer than three with nine going the full five.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
WHITMAN

The improved Missionaries enter the week tied for first in the NWC as one of three teams to get through the opening weekend with a 2-0 record.  They enter the week 4-11 overall.  Whitman opened up at home on Friday with a four-set victory over Lewis & Clark, pummeling the Pioneers with a .234 hitting percentage while finishing with no less than 13 kills in any one set.  Jillian Davis led three Missionaries' players in double-digit kills with 16 to go along with 13 digs.  Whitman went the distance with Willamette on Saturday, beating the Bearcats in five sets.  The Missionaries came back from down one set to win the second and third and then held off Willamette in a close deciding fifth set.  Whitman hit .211 for the match, led by 20 kills from Davis. Davis leads the team offensively with an average of 3.33 kills per set while Shae Kanakaole has 106 total kills.  As a team, Whitman is averaging 9.58 kills, 8.80 assists and 13.87 digs per set and have compiled a .122 hitting percentage.  Matt Helm is in his second season as Whitman head coach.

ALL TIME SERIES: Pacific leads 34-23
LAST MEETING: Whitman won in three sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) in Forest Grove on Nov. 3, 2012.

WHITWORTH
The Pirates enter the week tied for fourth in the NWC at 1-1 and are 7-7 overall after a heavy non-conference that included three tournaments.  The Pirates opened their NWC schedule at home on Friday, beating Willamette in five sets.  The Bearcats rallied from two sets down to force the fifth set. The Pirates had 11 kills while limiting Willamette to just five in the final frame for the win.  Jalana White led the Pirates with 20 kills and 15 digs.  It was nearly the same story line on Saturday as Lewis & Clark came back from two sets down to force a fifth set from the Pirates on Saturday.  This time, however, the visiting Pioneers won out in a lengthy fifth set that ended 22-20 and saw 14 ties and seven lead changes.  Kristine Kardell led Whitworth with 17 kills.  White leads the Whitworth offense with 200 kills and an average of 3.70 kills per set.  Maddye Dinsmore averages 10.07 assists per set.  As a team, Whitworth is averaging 12.07 kills, 11.04 assists and 16.80 digs per set.  Kati Bodecker is in her first season as Whitworth head coach.

ALL TIME SERIES: Whitworth leads 33-18
LAST MEETING: Pacific won in five sets (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-10) in Forest Grove on Nov. 2, 2012.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
SHE'S GOT A WAY:
Entering her second season with the Boxers, Marie Rewick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) continues to pace Pacific's offense.  Rewick enters the week leading the Northwest Conference with an average of 4.12 kills per set, having put away the ball 140 times in nine matches and 34 sets.  She had 25 sets in the Boxers' two matches last week, led by a 20-kill performance in Wednesday's four-set victory over George Fox.  Rewick also has five double-doubles in nine matches this season.  The last came in a three-set loss to Concordia-Moorhead on Sept. 14, where she finished with 17 kills and 11 digs.  Her season high is 23 kills amassed in a five-set loss to Northwest Christian on Sept. 4.

BIG SHOT: A relative unknown to the Pacific coaching staff before her arrival in Forest Grove, Una Areta (Fr., Kent, Wash.) has proven to be a very valuable part of the Pacific offense.  Coming off the bench in all nine matches, Areta has added a needed boost later in sets as she ranks second for the Boxers with 70 kills and leads the team with a .164 hitting percentage.  She added 16 kills against just six errors with a .263 hitting percentage in the Boxers' victory over George Fox on Wednesday.  In the three-set loss to Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Areta had seven kills and a .273 hitting percentage.  Areta arrived as Pacific from Kent-Meridian High School in Kent, Wash., where she was a two-time Second Team All-South Puget Sound League selection.

YOU MAY BE RIGHT: On a team rich with setters (there are three on the Pacific roster), Emily Farnham (So., University Place, Wash.) has emerged to reclaim the role as the Boxers' starting setter.  The starter in seven of the team's nine matches, Farnham enters the week ranked sixth in the NWC with an average of 6.54 assists per set.  Farnham finished with 44 of the Boxers' 49 assists in the four-set win over George Fox on Wednesday, but was limited to just eight assists in the Friday loss to No. 18 Pacific Lutheran.  She has also found some success on the attack, putting away four ball on dumps in the win over the Bruins.  Farnham split time last season with Megan Zablan (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) as the starting setter, making the lineup 13 times in 20 matches played.

SHE'S RIGHT ON TIME: Becky Sheller (So., Gresham, Ore.) seems to be in the right place to gather the ball up for the Boxers on defense.  Sheller enters the week ranked fifth in the NWC in digs, leading Pacific with her average of 5.18 digs per set.  She registered 25 sets in the win over George Fox on Wednesday and had 11 digs in Saturday's loss to Pacific Lutheran.  Sheller won the start job at libero as a freshman and has been the Boxers' starting libero in all nine matches so far in 2012.

AND SO IT GOES: Once again in 2013, Pacific is showing a preference towards longer matches.  In four of their nine matches this season, Pacific has gone past the minimum three sets.  On three of those occasions, the Boxers have played to a full five sets.  Pacific has now gone five sets in 13 of their 31 matches played under Head Coach Kip Yoshimura with an 8-4 record in those marathons.

I GO TO EXTREMES: Pacific once again finds its 2013 schedule laden with nationally-ranked competition.  The Boxers' schedule feature five matches against teams in the AVCA Division III Top-25 Poll.  Pacific has already played matches against No. 17 Colorado College and No. 18 Pacific Lutheran and will play the Lutes again on Oct. 18.  Puget Sound was ranked No. 15 in last week's poll.  The Boxers will face the Loggers on Oct. 12 and Nov. 9.  Augsburg, who beat Pacific at the Colorado College Invitational on Aug. 30, was among other teams receiving votes.

KEEPING THE FAITH: If fans are rattled by the Boxers' 2-7 start, they need only remember how Pacific finished up their first season under Head Coach Kip Yoshimura.  Pacific lost their first seven matches in 2012, including a pair to nationally ranked squads from Occidental and Cal Lutheran.  The Boxers rebounded to tear through the conference schedule, placing third in the NWC with a 10-6 record.  The 10 conference wins tied the school single season record and the thrid place finish was Pacific's best since 1994.

PACIFIC PICKED THIRD IN NWC PRESEASON POLL: Northwest Conference coaches have picked Pacific to repeat their third place in the NWC this season in the preseason poll released in August.  The Boxers received 44 of a possible 81 points in the poll, pulling in five points ahead of George Fox, chosen fourthm and eight points ahead of Willamette.  Puget Sound, who advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals in 2012, was picked with 70 points and seven first place votes ahead of defending champion Pacific Lutheran, who received 60 points and two first place votes.  Whitworth (20 pts.), Linfield (20 pts.) and Lewis & Clark (14 pts.), round out the poll.
