The Olivia's Carry The Load As Boxers Fall To Loggers
Box Score
FOREST GROVE – Pacific's two Olivia's combined for half of Pacific's points Friday night, but the effort was not enough to complete a comeback on Puget Sound as the Logeers went on to a 76-60 victory in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at the Stoller Center.
Â
Olivia Cook (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) led all scorers with 16 points while
Olivia Mayorga-Overtone (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) added 14 points off the bench. The two keyed a rally that saw the Boxers outscore the Loggers 28-16 over the final 8 minutes, 47 seconds of the first half to bring Pacific from 12 points down into a 38-38 halftime tie.
Â
The hot hand did not last in the second half, though, as the Boxers experienced a nine-minute scoring drought in the middle of the frame that gave Puget Sound the cushion they needed for the victory.
Â
Abby Jones (Jr., Haines, Alaska) added 10 points as the Boxers (4-11, 0-7 NWC) shot 37.7 percent from the field (20-53) and just 28 percent in the second half. The Boxers were also 4 of 14 from three-point range and 16 of 24 at the free throw line.
Â
Katy Ainslie led Puget Sound (11-5, 4-3 NWC) with 15 points as the Loggers finished the night shooting 42.6 percent from the field (26-61), 30 percent from three-point range (6-20) and 18 of 21 from the free throw line. Puget Sound also out-rebounded Pacific 43-31. Amanda Forshay added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Allie Wyszynski came off the bench to score 12 and Emily Sheldon scored 11.
Â
Puget Sound bolted out on a 10-0 run to open the game, fueled by seven points from Sheldon. Mayorga-Overtone ended the streak with her jumper at the 15:23 mark, but the Loggers kept the heat on and built a 12-point lead, 18-6, on Ainslie's jumper with 10:46 to go.Â
Â
The Loggers held a 27-17 lead when a pair of Mayorga-Overtone free throws started a 13-4 run that allowed the Boxers to pull within 31-30 on Cook's free throw with 3:13 left. Puget Sound bumped the lead back to seven points with 1:57 left, but Jones scored five of the final seven points of the frame, pulling the Boxers into a 38-38 tie at the half.
Â
The second half started out tight, but Taylor Jones' three-pointer at the 15:57 mark broke a 45-45 tie and sparked 19-1 run over the next nine minutes that broke the spirit of the Boxers. Wyszynski scored 10 points to lead the run as the Loggers bolted out to an 18-point advantage, 64-46, with 7:21 to go. Pacific would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Â
Pacific will close out the first half of the NWC schedule on Saturday at Linfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. A live audio webcast of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com. Puget Sound plays at George Fox.
