Boxers Come Back, But Are Cut Down By Loggers In Four

FOREST GROVE – Pacific rebounded from a first set loss to gain some second life against Puget Sound Friday night, but the Loggers used solid hitting in the final two sets to beat the Boxers in four, 25-10, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at the Stoller Center.
 
After dropping the first set by a 25-10 score, the Boxers matched the Loggers point-for-point in the second set until a four-point run towards the end of the frame to complete a 25-22 victory.  Puget Sound saved their best volleyball for the final two sets, however, committing just six hitting errors in the final two sets.
 
Una Areta (So., Kent, Wash.) led Pacific with 12 kills while Hannah Herbert (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) added eight kills to go along with 18 digs.  Emily Farnham (Jr., University Place, Wash.) put together her third double-double of the year with 24 assists and 14 digs.
 
Shawna Smith led Puget Sound with a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs while Nicolette Reynaud added 11 kills of her own.  Moira McVicar also had a double-double with 42 assists and 14 digs.
 
With the loss, Pacific dropped to 5-8, 1-4 NWC.  Puget Sound improved to 5-8, 4-1 NWC.
 
Puget Sound his a match-high .314 in the opening set and allowed Pacific just one point off of their own serve.  After jumping out to the early 3-0 lead, the Loggers opened up the 13-6 advantage on a pair of kills by Smith.  The score was 15-9 when the Loggers scored 10 unanswered points, paced by three kills by Heather Sangster, that all but closed the set in favor of the visitors.
 
Pacific regained their composure in the second set and opened up a 10-7 lead on a pair of Puget Sound attack errors and went ahead 14-10 on Kelly Wahl's (Fr., Richland, Wash.) kill.  Puget Sound came back to tie things up at 18-18 and took the short-lived 21-20 lead on a Pacific attack error.  Areta's kill on the next rally sparked a critical four-point run and Herbert's kill closed the set in favor of the Boxers, 25-22.
 
The Boxers opened the third set with an early 2-0 lead, but the Loggers' hitting proved to steady to keep up with.  A kill by Smith opened up a 12-6 Loggers' lead.  The Boxers came back to within 13-10 Haley Bedell's (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) kill, but Puget Sound replied with a six-point run that was fueled two Pacific attack errors.  A kill by Reynaud ended the run, which gave the Loggers a 19-10 lead en route to the 25-18 win.
 
Puget Sound opened the fourth set with a four-point run that was fueled by a trio of Pacific attack errors, but the Boxers kept things competitive.  Herbert had a kill that brought the Boxers within 13-10, but the Loggers answered with a six-point run that ended on a Rachel Garrison service ace that made it a 19-10 lead.  The Boxers would get a five-point run of their, which was also fueled by three Puget Sound errors, bringing the set within 20-16, but the Loggers would win five of the final six rallies to secure the win.
 
Pacific returns to action at home on Saturday, hosting No. 16 Pacific Lutheran at 7 p.m.  Puget Sound completes a three-match road trip on Saturday at George Fox.
