Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific came close to taking a momentum-stealing first set against Puget Sound Friday night, but a late rally allowed the Loggers that opening frame en route to a three-sweep of the Boxers, 27-25, 25-14, 25-19, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at Memorial Fieldhouse.

Pacific scored the first four points in that opening set, including a string of three service aces by Hannah Herbert (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.).  The Boxers maintained the lead until kills by Emily Convery and Shawna Smith gave the Loggers their first lead at 17-16.  The two teams traded leads two more times before a string of three Kristen Lane kills brought the Loggers to the brink of victory at 24-21.

The Boxers (6-17, 2-11 NWC) fought back to force extra points as kills by Hannah Smargiassi (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) and Una Areta (So., Kent, Wash.) lined the score up at 24-24.  Puget Sound held set point twice until a Pacific attack error sealed the 27-25 victory.

The come-from-behind win seemed to energize the Loggers (10-12, 9-4 NWC), who allowed the Boxers a combined 13 kills in the remaining two sets.  Three of those kills came early in the second set, though, as the Boxers jumped out to a 5-1 lead on another Smargiassi kill.  Puget Sound once again rallied, taking the 7-6 lead on a Convery kill.  From that point, Pacific won just one more point off their own serve.  The Loggers put the set away with a seven-point run late, fueled by five Pacific errors, and went on to the 25-14 win.

Puget Sound never trailed in the third set, opening up a 6-2 lead on Smith's kill and rifling ahead 20-11 on a block by Lane and Convery.  The Boxers, however, mounted a late rally of their own with an impressive eight-point run.  Areta had two kills and Puget Sound committed three errors in the run to come within 20-19, but the Loggers won the final five points to take the victory.

Areta led Pacific with nine kills while Haley Bedell (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) added seven kills.  Emily Farnham (Jr., University Place, Wash.) had a double-double of 13 assists and 10 digs.

Lane led Puget Sound with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with four blocks while Smith added 10 kills.

Pacific wraps up their final road trip of the 2014 season on Saturday, playing at defending NWC champion Pacific Lutheran.
