Box ScoreTACOMA, Wash. – A balanced offensive attack was not enough to hold off a red hot Pacific Lutheran attack Saturday night as the No. 20 ranked Lutes rolled to a three-set sweep of the Boxers, 25-14, 25-17, 25-14, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at Olson Auditorium.
Â
Marie Rewick (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) led the Boxers with five kills while
Hannah Smargiassi (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.),
Una Areta (So., Kent, Wash.) and
Hannah Herbert (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) each had four kills. While the attack was balanced, though, errors cost the Boxers a chance to win as 19 attack errors resulted in a .019 hitting percentage on the evening.
Â
Lucy Capron led Pacific Lutheran with seven kills. Samantha North and Ariana Judson finished with six kills apiece, with Judson adding a match-high five blocks. Amy Wooten and Kylai Cooley added five kills each. The Lutes finished with a .217 hitting percentage.
Â
The Lutes pieced together a number of runs that took the Boxers out of the first set early. Pacific took an early 4-3 lead on
Haley Bedell's (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) kill before PLU went on a five-point run, buoyed by two blocks by Wooten and Judson, to take an 8-4 lead. The Boxers were still within three points at 16-13 when two attack errors fueled another five-point run and won eight of the last nine rallies to cruise to the 25-14 win.
Â
PLU opened the second set with a 5-0 run, but the Boxers took advantage of three straight attack errors to come back within 6-5. The Lutes responded with a four-point run to go ahead 10-5, but the Boxers came back with four of their own, including two points on
Jamie Steach (So., Pasco, Wash.) service aces to come back within 10-9 and a PLU attack error allowed the Boxers to tie it at 12-12. Pacific stayed close until the Lutes went on a six-point run, two on Capron kills, to go up 22-16 before going on to the 25-17 victory.
Â
Pacific earned just two points off of their own serve in the third set as the Lutes made just two errors in the frame. PLU jumped out to a 12-5 lead on Cooley's kill and a four-point run late allowed PLU at 19-11 lead.
Â
Pacific will wrap up the 2014 season with two matches at home next weekend, hosting Linfield on Friday and Willamette on Saturday. Match time both nights is 7 p.m.
