Â
The two teams battled hard in an opening set that 11 ties and six lead changes. Pacific built their biggest lead of three points, 16-13, on an Areta kill, and traded the lead twice before going up 23-21 on a Linfield service error. A ball-handling error by the Boxers tied it 23-23. Pacific went up 24-23 on a service error, but McTaggart answered with a kill to force extra points. The Boxers went ahead 25-24 on an Areta kill before the Wildcats won the final three points, with Thompson closing the deal for the 27-25 win.
Â
Linfield vaulted out to the 7-2 lead on a Talbo kill before the Boxers stormed back to tie the frame at 9-9 on a Linfield ball-handling error. The lead then seesawed Pacific's way with the Boxers going up 17-13 on a pair of attack errors. The Wildcats charged back and led 24-23 before Rewick and
Hannah Smargiassi (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) came up with a block to force extra points again. The teams battled to 26-26 before a pair of attack errors gave Pacific the 28-26 victory.
Â
The third set was the most lopsided of the match. Pacific inched out to the 7-5 lead early on a string of Linfield errors before the Wildcats charged back, taking a 13-10 lead on a Pacific attack error and a 20-13 advantage of Talbo's kill. Pacific rallied to come back within 20-17 on another string of Linfield errors, but won four of the last six rallies to secure the 25-18 win.
Â
Pacific had to rally to take the fourth set, opening down 7-2 on a kill by Talbo. The Boxers rallied to come within 12-11 on a string of three kills by Bedell and tied the frame at 16-16 on a kill by Areta. The lead changed only once in the set when Areta punched away another kill to make a 23-22 lead before the Boxers used a service ace and a Linfield service error to win 25-23 and force a deciding fifth set.
Â
Linfield left nothing to chance in the fifth set, charging ahead to a 7-4 lead on a Pacific attack error. Pacific stayed within three points before the Wildcats won five of the final six rallies, with two kills by Caiti Barrie ending it.
Â
With the win, Linfield improved to 10-10, 9-6 NWC, while Pacific fell to 6-17, 2-13 NWC. Pacific will conclude the 2014 season on Saturday, hosting Willamette at 7 p.m. A live webcast of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com.
