FOREST GROVE – What had the makings of a rout turned into an exciting match Saturday as Pacific won the final four matches of the night, including two by first year collegiate wrestlers, in a 30-28 loss to Southwestern Oregon CC in men's wrestling action at the Stoller Center.
Pacific trailed 30-6 after the first six matches of the night, a total that included three forfeits that the Boxers had to give up at 125 pounds, 141 pounds and 165 pounds due to injuries.
Tyler Howe (Fr., Aumsville, Ore.) started the Pacific comeback, fully dominating his match with Ismael Rubio at 174 pounds to collect a 15-6 major decision. Howe scored three takedowns in the first round before picking six third round points, including a near fall, to improve to a team-best 8-5 on the year.
Joey Norcia (Jr., Santa Ynez, Calif.) followed at 184 pounds and trailed to Jacob Decker 4-2 after the first round. Decker chose the down position to begin the second period and was never able to get up as Norcia ground Decker down until he succumbed to a fall with eight seconds to go in the second period. The win was Norcia's first of the season.
David Adkinson (Fr., Clatskanie, Ore.) brought the Boxers within 30-22 by accepting a forfeit at 197 pounds. While the match was fully in hand for the Lakers, they expected to get a win over
Gunner Sigado (Fr., Redmond, Ore.), who was competing in his first collegiate wrestling match.
Sigado proved successful at eluding the offense of Daniel Chatmon, Jr., for much of the period and then stunned everyone by scoring a takedown and near fall late in the first period. Chatmon escaped from the down position to open the second period, but was quickly brought back down to the mat and lost by way of fall a minute into the period.
Pacific's only other win came at 133 pounds with
Eric Harder (Sr., Bethesda, Md.). He avenged a loss last month to Thaddeus Nelson, controlling the match from start to finish before scoring a pin as time expired in the second period. Harder improved to 7-3 on the season while picking up his team-leading third pin of the season.
Southwestern Oregon CC picked up their two non-forfeit wins by way of pin with Trever Olson scoring a first round pin over
Keith Thomas (Fr., Fremont, Calif.) at 149 pounds and Adrian Lyons-Lopez earning a pin over
Ricky Ridela (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii) at 157 pounds.
Pacific dropped to 0-2 on the season with the dual meet loss. Southwestern Oregon improved 2-2 on the year.
Pacific returns to the mat in two weeks as they compete against their first Division III competition of the season. The Boxers will compete at the Wartburg Desert Duals on Dec. 21 in Las Vegas, with matches against Concordia-Moorhead, Wis.-Lacrosse, Buena Vista and the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
