Pfefferle's Second Half Surge Sinks Lutes

Alex Pfefferle (Sr., Twin Falls, Idaho) put on a second half shooting clinic Friday night, almost single-handedly leading Pacific back from a five-point first half deficit in a 67-62 victory over Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at Olson Auditorium.

Pfefferle scored all of her team-high 20 points in the second half, going 6 for 7 from three-point range and 2 for 2 from the free throw line in the stanza. The performance paced a half that saw the Boxers shoot 50 percent from the field and 61 percent from three-point range.

Pacific (7-14, 3-10 NWC) finished the night shooting 39.7 percent from the field (25-63) and 43.5 percent from three-point range.Â
Olivia Mayorga-Overtone (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) scored 14 points and
Olivia Cook (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) scored 10 to go along with eight rebounds.

Shelly Kilcup led all scorers with 22 points as the Lutes (7-16, 3-11 NWC) finished the night shooting 34.8 percent from the field (24-69). Megan Abdo added 17 points and Katelyn Smith had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.

After the teams combined to score just nine points over the first five minutes of the game, PLU used a three-pointer by Kilcup to open up an 8-2 run that gave the Lutes a 13-6 lead with 12:46 to go in the first half. Pacific responded with an 8-1 run of their own, which culminated on Cook's fastbreak lay-in that gave the Boxers the 17-14 lead with 8:27 to go.

The Lutes came back to outscore the Boxers 17-7 the rest of the half. Kilcup hit a lay-up with 5:53 left to regain the lead for PLU and then she hit a three-point with 11 seconds left to give the Lutes a 31-25 halftime lead.

PLU's lead came to a quick end with the Pfefferle show started. Her first three-pointer of the half at the 17:02 mark ignited an 18-5 run that ended on Cook's lay-in with 9:38 left that gave the Boxers the 46-37 lead. The Lutes charged back with their own 15-6 run to take a 54-52 lead with 3:10 to go.

Pacific took the lead for good when Cook converted a three-point play with 1:36 left. Pfefferle took over from there, scoring the Boxers' final eight points for the victory.
