Curl's Strong Shot Not Enough To Cut Down Loggers
Box Score
TACOMA, Wash. –
Sarah Curl (Fr., Portland, Ore.) finished off her freshman season with a solid scoring performance Saturday night, but it was not enough to hold off a playoff-bound Puget Sound team in an 84-61 loss to the Loggers in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at Memorial Field House.
Â
The Loggers shot 48.8 percent in the first half and limited the Boxers to just 10 made from the field as they went ahead 47-28 at halftime and never looked back. The performance secured the fourth and final NWC Tournament position for the Loggers, which begins on Thursday.
Â
Curl finished the night scoring 22 points, connecting on 9 of 15 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free throw line.Â
Alex Pfefferle (Sr., Twin Falls, Idaho) closed her Pacific career by scoring 16 points on 6 of 10 from the field. Pacific finished the night shooting 41.7 percent from the field (25-60), recovering to make 48.4 percent in the second half.
Â
Amanda Forshay led Puget Sound with 30 points, hitting on 14 of 18 from the field to go along with nine rebounds. Emily Sheldon scored 15 points while Alexis Noren scored 11. The Loggers finished shooting 48 percent from the field (36-75) and out-rebounded the Boxers 48-30.
Â
With the loss, Pacific finishes the season at 8-16 overall, 4-12 NWC. Puget Sound improved to 16-9, 9-7 NWC, and will travel to undefeated Whitman on Thursday.
Â
Puget Sound never trailed in the contest and rode the early hot hand of Ashley Agcaoili to build a 17-3 lead with six minutes gone in the first half. Pacific managed to whittle the deficit back to eight on
Olivia Cook's (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) jumper at the 11:37 mark, but the Loggers responded with a 7-0 run to build up to a 24-9 lead on Hannah Lekson's three-pointer with 10:27 left.
Â
Pacific managed to cut the Puget Sound lead to 26-15 on Pfefferle's free throw with 8:15 to go, but Puget Sound went on a 21-13 run to close out the period. Noren gave the Loggers their biggest lead of 21 points, 47-26, with 17 seconds left and went into halftime with a 47-28 advantage.
Â
The Boxers appeared to have the makings of a little run early, cutting the lead to 51-38 on Curl's basket with 14:56 to go, but the Loggers would not let them come any closer. Puget Sound eventually built a 26-point lead, 71-45, on Forshay's jumper with 8:30 left.
Â
Saturday's game was the final contest for three Pacific players: Pfefferle,
Annette Highley (Juneau, Alaska) and
Kati Sheldon (Paso Robles, Calif.)
