Loggers Fall Boxers Thank To Pair Of First Half Surges

TACOMA, Wash. – A pair of four-goal surges allowed Puget Sound to gain the victory over Pacific Friday afternoon as the Loggers cut down the Boxers 16-10 in women's lacrosse action at East Field.
 
After Pacific jumped out to a 3-1 lead, the Loggers roared back with a four-goal surge over a seven-minute span, two of which came off the stick of Caroline Cook.  Pacific tied the game before Puget Sound closed the stanza with another four-goal run.  The Loggers owned a 9-5 halftime lead and limited the Boxers to just seven first period shots.
 
Amy Mayhugh (Jr., Tigard, Ore.) led Pacific for the second straight game, finishing with three goals and two assists.  Kasey Killlingbeck (Sr., Nampa, Idaho) and April Lanz (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) each scored two goals while Kara Smouse (So., Portland, Ore.), Paisley Hiefield (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Nicki Leeming (So., Las Vegas, Nev.) scored one goal apiece.
 
Olivia Keene led the Puget Sound offensive attack with six goals.  Kerri Smith added three goals while Cook, Maddie Soukup and Callie Holgate each scored two goals.  Puget Sound outshot the Boxers 36-19, held a 35-32 advantage in ground ball and a 17-11 edge in draw controls.  Pacific committed 28 turnovers, 11 of which were caused by the Loggers.
 
Puget Sound improve to 3-0 with the win and earned their first victory over Pacific since 2012.  The Boxers dropped to 1-1 on the year.
 
Pacific started off with the momentum with Killingbeck, Mayhugh and Lanz all scoring within the first five minutes of the game to take a 3-1 lead.  Cook's two goals bookended the Loggers' first four-goal run, all of which were unassisted, that gave opened up the 5-3 lead.  Pacific scored the next two goals, with Hiefield tallying with 6:55 to left to tie things at 5-5, but Smith started the final four-goal run that gave the Loggers the 9-5 halftime lead.
 
The Boxers scored the first two goals on the second half and Lanz's fourth goal of the season at the 26:57 mark brought Pacific within 9-7.  Puget Sound matched the Boxers goal-for-goal until Smith's goal with 10:37 left started another four-goal run that put the game out of reach.
 
Goalkeeper Adrienne Salzwadel (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) made 12 saves in goal for the Boxers while Hailey Palmore made seven stops in the win for the Loggers.
 
Pacific will complete a two-game road trip on Saturday, taking on Pomona-Pitzer in a neutral site game at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, Wash.  First draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
