Doubles Spell Trouble For Boxers In Close Loss To Pioneers

FOREST GROVE – Two losses in doubles proved to be the difference against Lewis & Clark Friday as Pacific dropped a 5-4 Northwest Conference women's tennis match to the Pioneers at the Holce Tennis Courts.
 
The Boxers (1-6, 0-5 NWC) opened the three-match doubles bracket with a victory at No. 1, with Kaitlyn Lomartire (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Francesca Battaglia (Jr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) scoring an 8-4 win over Claudia Lew and Eva Grigsby.  The duo improved to 5-2 on the season.
 
Lewis & Clark (1-7, 1-6 NWC) succeeded in taking the lower two matches.  Makena McCluskey and Allison Schneider took an 8-4 win from Carlee Rhodaback (So., Albany, Ore.) and Kelsey Lack (Sr., Grants Pass, Ore.) at No. 2, while Olivia Sweetman and Paloma Vizciano were 8-2 winners over Danielle Wicks (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Kelly Flores (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii).
 
The two teams were evenly split in the singles matches.  Lomartire picked up her seventh win of the season with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Lew at No. 1. Rhodaback improved to 4-4 on the year with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over McCluskey at No. 3 and Danielle Hunter (Jr., La Quinta, Calif.) was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Schneider at No. 5.
 
Sweetman collected a 6-3, 6-4 win over Battaglia at No. 2.  Grigsby was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Wicks at No. 4 and Vizciano was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Lack at No. 6.
 
Pacific returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Salem for a 1 p.m. match with Willamette.
