SALEM, Ore. – Willamette's pitching stymied the Pacific offense Sunday as the Bearcats swept a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader at the Willamette softball field.

Pacific stranded six runners on base and saw only two runners reach third base as Jade Smith threw a six-hit shutout to beat the Boxers 5-0.  After Pacific scored first in the nightcap, the Bearcats held off a seventh inning rally to secure the 3-2 victory.

Pacific finished with 12 hits in the two games, but stranded 13 runners on base.  Kaitlyn Shikada (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Rachel Roberts (So., Oregon City, Ore.) each had three hits in the twinbill to lead the Boxers.

The wins improved Willamette to 9-6, 8-5 NWC.  Pacific fell to 11-8, 6-7 NWC.

GAME 1: WILLAMETTE 5, PACIFIC 0
Willamette built their first game lead one run at a time, making single tallies in the first, third and fourth.  Heather Winslow was hit by a pitch to open the Willamette first and scored on a single by Ashley Pender.

Pender scored the Bearcats; run in the third when she doubled and then scored on Erin Norris' sacrifice fly.  Myranda Ramirez singled with two outs in the fourth inning and scored when Jenna King reached on an error.

Willamette added two more runs in the sixth on Winslow's double down the right field line and on Alex Shields' sacrifice fly that scored Ramirez.

Pacific's best scoring chance came in the fifth inning.  Ashley Mitchell (So., Redmond, Wash.) singled to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and stole third.  Smith then proceeded to get the next two Pacific batters out to end the threat.

King earned her sixth win of the season by allowing just the six hits and striking out five.  Allie Sims (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.) dropped to 7-3 on the season by allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks.  Roberts had two hits to lead the Boxers while Winslow and Pender had two hits each for the Bearcats.

GAME 2: WILLAMETTE 3, PACIFIC 2
Pacific made up for their lack of scoring in the first game by scoring in the first inning in game two.  Becca Moen (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) opened the game with a double and scored on Roberts' single up the middle.

Willamette responded immediately with two runs in the home half of the first.  Winslow led off the inning with a walk and scored when Pender reached base on an error.  Pender later scored on Norris' sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats plated what proved to be the winning run in the fifth.  Steffany Dunn reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double steal attempt.

Shikada started Pacific's seventh inning rally with a leadoff single.  She advanced to second on Emmie Moser's (So., Mt. Vernon, Wash.) single and scored on Moen's ground out.  Roberts and Quirena Natividad (So., Waipahu, Hawaii) walked to load the bases before Kylee Oshiro (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) lined out to end the game.

Victoria Bradshaw improved to 3-1 with the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts.  Sara Aasness (Sr., Kirkland, Wash.) fell to 4-3 on the season by allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.  Shikada's two hits led the Boxers while Pratt had two hits for the Bearcats.

After a string of six games in five days, Pacific will take 10 days of rest from competition.  The Boxers return to action on Wed., Mar. 26, when they play a non-conference doubleheader at Northwest Christian.
