FOREST GROVE – A young Pacific women's tennis team continued to look for the winning combination over the weekend, dropping a pair of Northwest Conference matches contested over the weekend at the Holce Tennis Courts.
 
On Friday, Pacific received wins in both singles and doubles from 
Kaitlyn Lomartire (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and 
Francesca Battaglia (Jr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.), but lost a 6-3 match to Pacific Lutheran.  The two would fall short on Saturday as Whitworth came in to take a 9-0 victory.
 
With the losses, Pacific dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in NWC matches.
 
PACIFIC LUTHERAN 6, PACIFIC 3
Lomartire and Battaglia opened the Boxers' match with Pacific Lutheran with a convincing win, scoring an 8-3 victory over Leah Newell and Samantha Lund at No. 1.
 
The Lutes, however, rebounded to take the remaining two doubles matches.  Allison McClure and Mariah Siemion were 8-6 winners over 
Carlee Rhodaback (So., Albany, Ore.) and 
Kelsey Lack (Sr., Grants Pass, Ore.) at No. 2 while Megan Beyers and Emily Bower scored an 8-3 victory over 
Danielle Hunter (Jr., La Quinta, Calif.) and 
Kelly Flores (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) at No. 3.
 
Lomartire cruised to the win to open singles play, capturing a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Newell in the No. 1 flight.  Battaglia battled back from a first set loss to win a second-set tiebreaker and a third-set super tiebreaker to knock off Lund, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-4, in the No. 2 match.
 
The remainder of the singles flights would go the way of the Lutes.  Beyers was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Rhodaback at No. 3 and McClure scored a 6-0, 6-1 decision over 
Danielle Wicks (So., Pheonix, Ariz.) at No. 4.  Siemion was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Flores at No. 5 and Bower registered a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hunter at No. 6.
 
WHITWORTH 9, PACIFIC 0
The powerful Pirates proved opened the match on Saturday by pulling through in the doubles.  Saryn Mooney and Taylor Peña engaged Lomartire and Battaglia in a close battle in the No. 1 flight, taking away the 9-7 victory.
 
Bella Hoyo and Morgan McDivitt scored an 8-0 shutout of Rhodaback and Lack at No. 2 while Anabelle Burns and Hannah Wallin were 8-2 winners over Wick & Flores at No. 3.
 
In singles, Lomartire saw her four-match win streak come to an end as she dropped a close third set super tiebreaker to lose to Mooney, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, in the No. 1 flight. Battaglia fell 6-1, 6-1 to Peña at No. 2 while Hoyos scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the Pirates in the No. 3 match over Rhodaback.
 
McDivitt was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Wicks at No. 4.  Burns registered a 6-0, 6-0 win over Flores at No. 5 and Caylee Lamm was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Hunter at No. 3.
 
Pacific returns to non-conference action next Saturday when they host the College of Idaho at the Holce Courts.
