Early Scoring Opportunities Put Athenas Past Boxers

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps made the most of their first half scoring chances Monday, scoring 13 goals on 16 shots in the opening 30 minutes to beat Pacific 19-9 in women's lacrosse action at Zinia Field.

The Athenas (7-3) made their scoring look methodical, scoring in two and three-goal spurts to slowly build their advantage throughout the period. Claremont outshot the Boxers 31-19 and held a 15-11 advantage in ground balls while both teams finished with 15 draw controls.

Amy Mayhugh (Jr., Tigard, Ore.) once again led Pacific (5-6) in scoring with five goals while
April Lanz (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) had four goals.

Izzy Laterzo and Hilary Slauson led Claremont with five goals apiece. Cara Cancelmo added three goals while two other players finished with two goals each.

After the two teams traded goals in the first two minutes of the contest, the Athenas put together the first of their three-goal runs. Cancelmo started the run at the 27:21 mark and Slauson closed it with 23:40 left to build a 4-1 lead.

The Boxers came back to within 4-3 with a two-goal surge of their own, ending on Lanz's first goal of the game with 20:31 left in the half. The Athenas went on to score five of the next six goals and built a 9-4 lead on Zoe Pinczower's strike with 16:11 left.

After Pacific put in a pair to come back within 10-7 with 8:36 left in the first, the Athenas all but secured the contest with a five-goal run that stretched into the opening minutes of the second half. Slauson's goal with 11 seconds left allowed the Athenas a 13-7 halftime lead.

Cancelmo closed the run with the first two goals of the second half, building a 15-7 advantage. Lanz scored the next two goals, but the Boxers would not tally again the rest of the period.

Adrienne Salzwedel (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) took the loss in goal for Pacific, making nine saves. Sara Ginsburg was the winner for Claremont, making 10 stops.

Pacific will close out their three-game southern California road trip on Wednesday, playing at Occidental at 4 p.m.
