Boxers Fall In Pair Of High-Scoring Contests To Bearcats

SALEM, Ore. – The moisture in the air on a rainy Saturday afternoon did little to keep the ball from popping off the bats as Pacific dropped a pair of games to Willamette in a high-scoring Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader at John Lewis Field.

The two teams had 20 hits and two home runs each in the opener and combined for 15 extra-base hits. Both teams scored 11 runs over the first six innings before the Bearcats used a two-run seventh to secure the 14-12 victory.

Pacific trailed 5-2 in the nightcap before rallying to score one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to force extra innings. The Boxers took the lead in the 10th on
Jimmy Brakebush's (So., Portland, Ore.) single before Willamette rallied when Brad Breier's game-tying single and Tommy Kawamura's game-winning base hit for a 7-6 win.

Kyle Treadway (Jr., Phoenix, Ore.) led Pacific offensively with six hits, three runs and two RBIs, including a double and a home run in the opener.Â
Nathan Suyematsu (So., Tualatin, Ore.) added five hits, two runs and three RBIs.

With the losses, Pacific dropped to 8-13, 2-9 NWC. Willamette improved to 15-10, 9-4 NWC.

GAME 1: WILLAMETTE 14, PACIFIC 12
Willamette opened scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair on Ty Wyatt's single to center field. The Boxers then exploded for five runs in the top of the second.Â
Ben Duerr (So., Lebanon, Ore.) scored two on his double down the left field line, Suyematsu added two more with a single to left field and
Walker Olis (So., Burlington, Wash.) made it a 5-2 lead on his single to left field.

The Bearcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the second before Pacific added four more in the top of the third for a 9-4 lead. After
Justin Strayer (So., Ventura, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning, Treadway hammered a two-run homer to right field. Three batters later, Suyematsu singled to score
Dan Jaffe (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Nick Garrett (So., San Diego, Calif.) later singled to score Duerr.

Willamette punctuated their seven-run third with a pair of home runs. Tiras Koon opened the rally with a two-run shot to right field. Rolenn Himuro scored one on his double to right and Tommy Kawamura scored on his single before Hunter Gallant hammered a three-run homer to right center field.

Pacific closed to within 11-10 in the fifth on Olis' home run to left center field. Treadway tied the game in the sixth when he doubled to lead off the sixth and then stole home on a squeeze play.

Shea Harrison started Willamette's winning seventh when he reached on an error and scored on Gallant's two-run single to left field. Pacific added one in the eighth on Duerr's single to left center field before Tosh Semlacher led off the Willamette with a triple and scored on Breier's single up the middle.

Levi Peterson (Jr., Denver, Colo.) took the loss for Pacific, dropping to 1-1 on the season. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks in 3.2 innings of relief. Jackson Watt earned the win in relief for Willamette, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts in three innings.

Strayer led Pacific by going 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs while Treadway went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs. Gallant and Wyatt each went 4 for 5 to lead Willamette.

GAME 2: WILLAMETTE 7, PACIFIC 6 (10 INNINGS)
Willamette jumped out to the early lead by scoring runs in each of the first three innings. The Bearcats scored two in the first on a single by Wyatt and a sacrifice fly by Koon. Willamette added single runs in the second and third on home runs by Breier and Gallant.

Pacific started their comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring the first run on a double by Duerr and the second when
Mike Thomson (So., Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored when Suyematsu reached on an error.

Willamette added one in the fifth when Wyatt scored on Semlacher's sacrifice fly. Pacific took the run back in the sixth when Treadway scored on Duerr's single to left field. Pacific tied the game in the seventh when Strayer scored two on a sacrifice bunt that plated Brakebush and Olis.

Pacific took the 6-5 lead in the 10th inning when Olis singled and scored on Brakebush's two-out single through the left side. Semlacher opened the Willamette 10th with a double and scored on Breier's single through the left side. Breier then reached second on an error on the try to put him out at first.

Reliever
Topher Mood (Sr., St. Helens, Ore.) intentionally walked the next two batters before Kawamura singled to left field, scoring Breier for the winning run.

Mood took his second loss of the season for the Boxers, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in five innings. Jackson Watt earned the win for Willamette in relief, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Olis led Pacific by going 3 for 4 while Suyematsu, Brakebush, Garrett and Treadway each had two hits. Â Breier led Willamette by going 4 for 5.

The two teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
