Second Half Scoring Surge Not Enough To Overtake Tigers

FOREST GROVE – A second half scoring surge, led by a three-goal performance by Amy Mayhugh (Jr., Tigard, Ore.) was not enough to lead Pacific back against a high-octane Colorado College team Saturday as the Tigers knocked off the Boxers 14-7 in women's lacrosse action at Lincoln Park Stadium.
 
Colorado College limited the Boxers to just one first half goal and at one point scored seven straight goals to build an 8-1 lead with five minutes gone in the second half.  The Boxers finally hit their offensive stride in the second half, scoring six goals in the losing effort.  The Tigers outshot the Boxers 41-18 and held a 32-21 advantage in ground balls.
 
Two of Mayhugh's three goals came in the second half.  Meg Chapman (Fr., Woodinville, Wash.), April Lanz (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.), Paisley Hiefield (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Melanie Niehus (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) each had one goal.
 
Madeline Scherer led Colorado College (4-1) with five goals.  Elise Burchard finished with three goals and two assists.  Mary Taussig added two goals and four other players scored one goal apiece.
 
After the two teams traded goals over the first three minutes of the contest, the Tigers used a goal by Molly Lyons at the 24:57 mark to start their string of seven unanswered goals that proved the difference in the game.  Five of those came in a 10-minute stretch of the first half that ended when Scherer's third goal of the game with 16:23 to go made it a 6-1 Colorado College lead.
 
Taussig and Burchard closed the run out by scoring the first two goals of the second half before Lanz snapped the string with her goal at the 22:04 mark.  The Tigers responded with three more unanswered goals, going ahead 11-3 on Scherer's goal with 11:20 to go.  Niehus and Mayhugh added back-to-back goals at 10:21 and 7:52, respectively, but the Tigers would score three of the final five goals to close out the contest.
 
Adrienne Salzwedel (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) took the loss in goal for the Boxers, making nine saves.  Martha Smith was the winner in goal for Colorado College, making five stops.
 
Today's game started a string of four home games for the Boxers over a seven-day span.  The home stand continues on Tuesday as the Boxers host Kenyon at 5 p.m.  A live video webcast of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com.
