Game 2 FOREST GROVE – By the fifth inning of the first game, the Boxers looked like they were done. They were down 5-0 and couldn't seem to stop the Bruins' hitting. But you can never count these girls out.
After a three-run homerun by
Quirena Natividad (So., Waipahu, Hawaii), the Boxers mounted a massive comeback and scored the winning run on
Kylee Oshiro's (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) single in bottom of the seventh as the Boxers won the opener 7-6. Pacific then went on to use a three-run sixth inning in the second game to secure the split, 5-1.
Oshiro had another big performance against the Bruins, finishing the day with five hits, three RBIs. Natividad finished the day with two hits, five RBIs and three runs.
Rachel Roberts (So., Oregon City, Ore.) picked up three stolen bases on the day, bringing her school record and NCAA Division III leading total to 44.
GAME 1: PACIFIC 7, GEORGE FOX 6
After starting the game with four scoreless innings, the Bruins came alive in the top of the fifth inning when Felicia Chavez and Ashley Bunce scored off a single by Kayla Anderson. Kat Hylton then scored off a double by Amanda Woods. Baylee Westrick then singled to score Anderson. Woods then came home on a bases loaded walk, making the score 5-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Boxers fought right back. Natividad hit a three-run home run, scoring
Kylee Yamamoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) and
Becca Moen (Sr., Gresham, Ore.), pulling to within 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Margaret Bachmeier (Fr., Newberg, Ore.) hit a single to center field that scored
Ashley Mitchell (So., Redmond, Wash.) and cutthe Bruins' lead to one. George Fox took the run back in the top of the seventh when Courtney Howard scored off a double by Becca Olson.
In the bottom of the seventh, Moen scored off an error and Roberts scored off a single by Natividad to tie the game. Oshiro then hit a big single to score Natividad, sealing the comeback.
Allie Sims (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.) earned her 10th win of the season in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in three innings. George Fox's Erin Hento was given the loss after giving up seven hits and six runs, five earned. She also had seven strikeouts and five walks.
GAME 2: PACIFIC 5, GEORGE FOX 1
The Boxers got on the scoreboard first after Natividad hit a sacrifice single that scored Roberts and gave Pacific the 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Bruins tied the game at 1-1 with a run by Megan Furtado off a single by Howard.
In the bottom of the second, Collura hit a single that scored
Emily Tesdale (Fr., Woodland, Wash.) and gave the Boxers the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Oshiro hit a single that scored Moen and
Emmie Moser (So., Mt. Vernon, Wash.). Then Natividad scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell, giving the Boxers the 5-1 lead, and the game.
Sara Aasness (Sr., Kirkland, Wash.) her 11th win of the season in her eighth complete game. She gave up one run, five hits and no earned runs. He also had eight strikeouts and three walks. Allyssa DenDekker picked up a loss after giving up 14 hits, five runs, five homeruns, one walk and one strikeout.
With the wins, Pacific improved to 23-9, 18-8 NWC, and maintained their two-game lead over Whitworth. George Fox dropped to a tie for fifth place in the NWC at 23-15, 12-14 NWC.
Between games, the coaches and the players honored the three seniors on the team: Moen, Aasness and
Maddie Collura (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.)
. All were presented with leis, flowers and very emotional stories from Hill. Hill and assistant coach Paul Sabah were also honored as today were the final home games for the pair, who will retire at the end of the season.
The Boxers will finish the regular season Sunday in Newberg with another double-header against George Fox. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
