Boxers Blanked By Bucs As Pitching Rules The Day

SPOKANE, Wash. – For the second time in three games, Whitworth's starting pitching kept Pacific off the bases as the Pirates secured the series victory with an 8-0 shutout of Pacific Sunday in Northwest Conference baseball action at Merkel Field.
 
Whitworth starter Spencer Ansett allowed just five hits and a walk in the complete game victory, striking out one to improve to 3-2 on the year.  The Boxers stranded two runners in scoring position.
 
Nathan Suyematsu (So., Tualatin, Ore.) took the loss for the Boxers, dropping to 2-2 on the season.  He allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout in five innings.  Suyematsu helped his own cause at the plate, finishing with his third straight two-hit game.
 
Suyematsu managed to hold the Pirates to just one hit over the first four innings.  In the fifth, Nick Motsinger led off with a single before Gerhard Muelheims stepped up for a two-run homer that opened scoring.
 
Whitworth added two runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI doubles by Thomas Wakem and Matt Nelson.  The Pirates truly broke the game open when Nelson smashed a grand slam off reliever Topher Mood (Sr., St. Helens, Ore.).
 
Motsinger and Nelson each had three hits to lead Whitworth, with Nelson adding five RBIs.  With the win, Whitworth improved to 10-19, 7-11 NWC.  Pacific fell to 11-18, 4-14 NWC.
 
Prior to the game, Whitworth honored Pacific Head Coach Greg Bradley and presented him with a commemorative baseball.  Bradley, who was coaching his final game in Spokane, will retire after 19 years as Pacific baseball coach at the end of the season.
 
Pacific returns home to prepare for a three-game series with Puget Sound.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at noon before concluding the series on Saturday.
