Boxers Earn a Date With Linfield After a Tightly Contested Opener

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Kaitlyn Shikada (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) proved the difference for Pacific Friday, scoring the game-tying and game-winning runs to lead the Boxers to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Whitworth in their first game of the Northwest Conference Softball Tournament at Del Smith Field.
 
With the Boxers trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Shikada reached on a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Rachel Roberts (So., Oregon City, Ore.) delivered a double to left, bringing Shikada home to tie game.
 
Shikada again singled to leadoff the seven, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third when Becca Moen (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) reached on an error.  That allowed Roberts to hit a sacrifice fly to center field, easily scoring Shikada from third for the game-winner.
 
The Boxers picked up another big win in nail-biter fashion this afternoon, beating the Whitworth Pirates 3-2 to earn a spot in today's nightcap against the No. 1 seed Linfield Wildcats.
 
The nightcap for the first day of the NWC Tournament will begin at 6:30pm. The Wildcats squashed the Willamette Bearcats 14-3 in five innings in the first game of the day.

The Boxers put the first run on the board at the bottom of the third inning after a single from Roberts scored Moen and gave the Boxers the 1-0 lead.
 
The Pirates fought right back in the top of the fourth inning when M'Liss Powles scored off a single by Kayla Batastini, tying the game up at 1-1.

The Pirates grabbed the 2-1 lead after a triple by Alyssa Hall scored Makenzie Hope in the top of the fifth inning.
 
Roberts hit a big double to score Kaitlyn Shikada at the bottom of the fifth inning tie the game back up at 2-2.

In the seventh inning, Shikada scored off a sacrifice hit by Roberts to give the Boxers the big 3-2 win.

Sara Aasness (Sr., Kirkland, Wash.) earned the win on the day after pitching all seven innings and giving up just two earned runs on eight hits. She also had nine strikeouts and two walks. Madi Perez picked up the loss for giving up eight hits, and three runs, two earned. She also had two walks and five strikeouts.
