Game 1 Box Score |
Game 2 Box ScoreFOREST GROVE – Errors proved costly for Pacific on defense and Whitman used solid pitching to keep the Boxers' bats at bay Saturday as the Missionaries swept a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
In the opener, Whitman starter Spencer Hobson pitch eight innings of shutout baseball while the Missionaries converted an error into the winning run in the second inning in a 2-0 shutout win. Whitman made the errors hurt again in the second game as the Boxers committed five and allowed six unearned runs in a 10-6 loss.
Nathan Suyematsu (So., Tualatin, Ore.) led Pacific offensively in the leadoff spot, finishing with four hits, two runs, a RBI and a pair of doubles.
With the losses, Pacific dropped to 8-15, 2-12 NWC. Whitman improved to 15-13-1, 4-10 NWC.
GAME 1: WHITMAN 2, PACIFIC 0While Pacific starter
Kyle Treadway (Jr., Phoenix, Ore.) had a solid effort in his second complete game of the season, Hobson proved more potent. Putting together his best outing of the season, Hobson allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out six in eight innings of work.
At one point, Hobson retired 17 straight batters as he improved to 2-1 on the season before yielding to Nick Johnson in the ninth, who earned his first save of the year.
After a quiet first inning, the Missionaries made Pacific pay for an error to open scoring in the second. After Cameron Young led off the inning with a single, Paul Heywood reached on throwing error that allowed Young to score from first.
The Missionaries added an insurance run in the sixth when Peter Carmichael hit a leadoff single and scored when Young grounded into a bases-loaded double play.
Pacific saw a number of scoring chances go unrealized as the Boxers left six runners on base, three in scoring position.
Nick Garrett (So., San Diego, Calif.) singled to lead off the second inning and made it to third with just one out, but an infield fly and a fly out ended the threat.
The Boxers had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth inning when
Ben Duerr (So., Lebanon, Ore.) and
Donnie Bradley (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) moved into scoring position on a double steal.
Walker Olis (So., Burlington, Wash.) could not bring them home as Hobson coxed him into a ground out to end the inning.
Treadway dropped to 2-5 on the season with the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Young and Ozzy Braff each had two hits to lead the Missionaries, while four different batters had Pacific's hits.
GAME 2: WHITMAN 9, PACIFIC 6Whitman again made Pacific pay for mistakes to score two in the top of the first. Jimmy Madden was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and Carmichael reached safely on a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by the Boxers. Madden came home on a bases loaded walk and Carmichael scored on Young's sacrifice fly.
The Missionaries converted another error into a run in the third when Braff reached on an error, stole second and scored on Cohen's single to left. Whitman made it a 5-0 game in the third. Moyes led off the frame with a double, Heywood followed with a single and both eventually scored on fielder's choice ground outs.
Pacific scored it's first runs of the series in a two-run fourth inning. Suyematsu led off with a double and scored on Olis' one-out single to left center field. Olis advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a balk. The Boxers made it a 5-3 in the sixth when Suyematsu reached on an error and scored on Olis' sacrifice fly.
Whitman took one run back in the seventh as Young hit a leadoff single and scored on a balk. The Missionaries then capitalized on two Pacific errors to score two in the top of the eighth, with both runs scoring on Young's bases loaded fielder's choice.
Pacific rallied to take back one run in the eighth as
Josh Keithly (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached on a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Suyematsu. Jonny Lari gave it right back to the Missionaries in the ninth when his two-out double to center field scored Madden.
Pacific mounted another mini-run with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Duerr led off with a single and scored on
Mike Thomson's (So., Yorba Linda, Calif.) single down the right field line. Thomson later scored on Bradley's single through the right side.
Whitman starter Will Thompson improved to 2-2 with the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Tyler Kotchik (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) fell to 2-3 with the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 3.1 innings.
Braff finished by going 3 for 5 with two runs to lead the Missionaries at the plate. Suyematsu went 3 for 5 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Boxers.
The two teams will complete their three game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon. A live video webcast of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com.
