Box ScoreTACOMA, Wash. – Pacific's defense succeeded in turning away a number of Pacific Lutheran scoring chances until the bitter end Sunday, but Lauren Larson's goal in the 107th minute allowed the Lutes a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Boxers in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at East Field.
Â
The winning shot was just the second by the Lutes in the overtime stanzas. Blake Warner took the ball on the right side and crossed to Larson, who wasted no time in sending the ball in from six yards out for her fourth goal of the season.
Â
"We hung in there for the first 90 minutes, but had a really phenomenal overtime period," said Pacific head coach
Morgan Joseph. "The bad news was that we waited to long to really play. The good news is that over the two matches we responded in the best possible manner."
Â
The Pacific defense was kept busy all afternoon, but held quite strong. The Lutes outshot Pacific 16-6, but only put six of those attempts on goal. The Boxers also proved adept in fending off set pieces as the Lutes held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
Â
"Huge kudos to the backline and goalkeeper
Kristina Morris (So., Molalla, Ore.) for defending with no fear," said associate head coach Dane Joseph. "They were superb today and PLU just scored a good goal, nothing more."
Â
Morris took just her first loss of the season in goal for the Boxers, making five saves. Takara Mitsui was winning goalie for PLU, making three saves to earn her second shutout of the year.Â
McKenna Davidson (Jr., Kailua Kona, Hawaii) led Pacific offensively with three shots, all of them on goal.
Â
Pacific returns home next weekend for a pair of matches, hosting Whitman on Saturday and Whitworth on Sunday. Both matches begin at noon. A live webcast of the matches will be available at GoBoxers.com.
