Hannah Herbert (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) put together one of her best collegiate performances Friday night, but it was not enough to pull Pacific through as the Boxers fell in three close sets to Whitman, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at the Sherwood Center.

Herbert finished with 13 kills and a .312 hitting percentage to go along with eight digs and four blocks. She led a night that saw Pacific (5-8, 1-3 NWC) finished with a .137 hitting percentage and a total of eight blocks.Â
Una Areta (So., Kent, Wash.) added nine kills with
Emily Farnham (Jr., University Place, Wash.) contributing 15 assists and
Lia Zablan (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) adding 13 digs.

Whitman (6-5, 2-1 NWC) finished the night with a .183 hitting percentage and 13 blocks, which made the difference in the match. Megan Bafus led the Missionaries with 12 kills. Natalia Zia collected an impressive 12 blocks. Anna Dawson finished with 35 digs and Hannah Linsenmayer had 21 digs.

After a nip-and-tuck start to the first set, Pacific pulled ahead by five as they took a 19-14 lead on a Whitman attack error. The Boxers made it a 21-15 lead on Herbert's fifth kill of the night, Whitman came alive with a 10-point to close the set. Natalia Zia had two blocks and a kill, while Abby Zeethoff had two blocks to fuel the winning run.

Pacific held the early lead in the second, going up 5-2 on a Whitman attack error. The Missionaries came back to take a 10-7 lead on a Pacific attack error and eventually went ahead 20-12 on a Seethoff kill. The Boxers mounted a rally of their own, coming back within 21-20 on Herbert's kill and tied the frame at 22-22 on
Haley Bedell's (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) service ace. The set was again tied at 23-23 before Bafus' kill and a block by Zea and Shae Kanakaole closed out the win for Whitman.

Whitman never trailed in the third set, but never seemed to completely shake the Boxers before the stanza ended. The Missionaries went ahead 4-0 to begin the frame and eventually built a 16-11 advantage on a block by Bafus and Zea. The Boxers closed to within three points late when
Hannah Smargiassi's (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) ace made it 22-19, but could come no closer.

The Boxers wrap up their eastern Washington trip on Saturday, taking on Whitworth in Spokane, Wash., at 6 p.m.
