Box ScoreFOREST GROVE –
Deanna Quadrel (So., Richland, Wash.) scored her first goal of the season to cap an offensively charged first half for Pacific Saturday, but Whitman came back in the second half to force a 1-1 tie with the Boxers in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at Hanson Stadium.
Â
Quadrel's goal was a result of the Boxers being in the right on a set play. Following a foul about 30 yards away from the goal on the near sideline,
Lucy Almao (So., Orange County, Calif.) one-timed her direct free kick off the crossbar. The carom fell into a scrum, which
Kamryn Plechot (Sr., La Palma, Calif.) pulled away for a point-blank attempt. The rebound came out to Quadrel, who fired into the left corner for her first goal of the season.
Â
Whitman's (4-2-1, 2-0-1 NWC) goal came early in the second half as the Missionaries pushed hard offensively. The pressure finally resulted in a goal in the 63rd minute off a corner kick. Lena deGuzman landed her kick to the corner of the eight-yard box. Naomi Lee re-positioned the ball to the feet of Soo, who gunned it into the right side.
Â
Pacific (4-3-1, 1-2-1 NWC) pushed the offensive pace in the first and created a number of solid scoring opportunities.Â
Ashley Park-Hunt (So., Mililani, Hawaii) created the first in the sixth minute, feeding
Kara Lankey (So., La Canada, Calif.) with a pass from midfield. Lankey cruised into the middle of the box before her ball was punched across the end line by a pair of Whitman defenders. That resulted the first of three corner kicks the Boxers earned in the first 12 minutes.
Â
In the 22nd minute,
Holly Chang-Northway (So., Eugene, Ore.) was headed toward the goal when she was tripped up. The ball came out to
Nicholle Leeming (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.), who shot from the top of the 18-yard box went over the crossbar.
Â
Whitman's best first half opportunities came at the beginning and end of the period. Naomi Lee took Whitman's first shot in the third minute, firing from 18 yards out to the hand of goalkeeper
Kristina Morris (So., Molalla, Ore.). Alissa Soo had a great opportunity in the 43rd minute, but Morris managed to jump up and parry the ball over the crossbar for the save.
Â
Pacific had two good scoring looks in the final half hour of regulation. Chang-Northway's corner kick in the 70th minute landed right at the top of the eight-yard box, but Plechot's header went over the crossbar. Park-Hunt also had a solid wide open opportunity in the 75th minute, only to watch her attempt go over the bar.
Â
Both teams had ample opportunities in the overtime period, with Whitman outshooting the Boxers 5-4 in the extra 20 minutes. For the match, Pacific outshot Whitman 13-12 and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Morris fought to her first tie of the season in goal, improving to 3-1-1 on the year as she made six saves. Haley Case took the tie for Whitman, making three stops.
Â
Pacific finishes up the home weekend on Sunday, hosting Whitworth at noon. Whitman will travel south to face Linfield.
