Box ScoreFOREST GROVE – Whitworth's strong offensive weekend continued at the expense of Pacific Sunday afternoon as Karl Muelheim's two goals led the Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the Boxers in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at Hanson Stadium.
Â
Muelheims scored goals in each half while Samual Jarrett and Michael Ramos added second half goals as the Pirates finished a weekend that saw them score 11 goals in two matches.Â
Elan Yogi (So., Mililani, Hawaii) prevented the shutout as he scored his first collegiate goal in the 55th minute.
Â
Pacific (3-6-0, 0-4-0 NWC) found it hard to muster much in the way of offense. They were outshot by the Pirates 17-3 and had just one shot in the first half.
Â
Muelheims tallied Whitworth's first goal in the 23rd minute. Positioned in the middle of the 18-yard box, he was positioned well to collect a missed shot by Ramos that careened off the crossbar and re-directed it into the left corner of the net.
Â
Jarrett claimed his own unassisted goal in the 37th minute. Finding himself alone with the ball in the middle of the box, Jarrett turned himself 180 degrees and fired to the lower left corner, catching Pacific goalie
Leyton Thommasen (Fr., Des Moines, Wash.) off guard. The goal was Jarrett's third of the season.
Â
Pacific's only shot of the first half came early as Yogi came open at the far corner of the 18-yard box, but his hard shot was saved by Whitworth goalie Timmy Costa.
Â
Pacific kept pressing in the second half and finally broke through on just their second shot of the match in the 55th minute. Estaban Cruz (Fr., Dayton, Ore.) fed the ball to Yogi from well up the near sideline and Yogi's angling shot caught Costa off guard and rolled into the right corner for the goal.
Â
Muelheims wasted little time getting the brace back for the Pirates. Fed well with a crossing pass by Rylan Berriman on the far corner of the 18-yard box in the 62nd minute, Muelheims angled his shot from eight yards out into the far left corner for his second goal of the match.
Â
After scoring three goals against George Fox the day before, Ramos got into the scoring parade for the Pirates in the 79th minute. Eric Espinoza fed Ramos to the central area of the 18-yard box and proceeded to thread the ball past Thomassen for the goal. The strike was Ramo's league-leading 10th tally of the season and extended his streak to nine matches of at least a goal or an assist.
Â
Thommasen made four saves in the loss, dropping to 3-6-0 on the season. Costa earned his third win of the season and made one save.
Â
Pacific is on the road for their next three matches. The road trip opens on Saturday at Willamette followed by a Sunday match at Linfield. Whitworth returns home to host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Puget Sound on Sunday.
