Box ScoreFOREST GROVE – Pacific's defense put together another solid performance, but Whitworth's Tiara Pajimola broke through with the match's only goal in the 72nd minute as the Boxers fell 1-0 to the Pirates in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at Hanson Stadium.
Â
Pajimola's strike came at the end of an offensive flurry midway through the second half for the Pirates. Sarah Mickelsen fed the ball from the far side of the pitch to Pajimola, who was set up in the central area of the eight-yard box to head in her third goal of the season.
Â
It was the only goal in a match that saw scoring opportunities come at a premium for both squads. Whitworth outshot Pacific 7-6 and the two teams combined for just five shots on goal.Â
Kara Lankey (So., La Canada, Calif.) and
Sydney Virgen (Fr., Richland, Wash.) each had two shots to lead Pacific.
Â
Neither team had a shot on goal in the first half. Whitworth's best opportunity came in the eighth minute when Katie Bischoff's attempt from the top of the 18-yard box flew over the crossbar. Pacific's best first half attempt came in the 44th minute when Luca Almao's (So., Orange County, Calif.) pass found Virgen in the middle of the box, but the shot rolled wide left.
Â
The first shot on goal for either team came in the 56th minute when Whitworth's Hannah Bokma hammered a one-timer from 25 yards away, which was easily fielded by Pacific goalkeeper
Kristina Morris (So., Molalla, Ore.). Pacific had their first shot on goal in the 61st when
Emily Tuffey (Sr., Valencia, Calif.) hammered a shot from the near corner of the 18-yard box to the waiting hands of Whitworth netminder Andrea Stump.
Â
Morris dropped to 3-2-1 with the loss. She made two saves, but stopped a lot more crosses that could have resulted in Whitworth scoring opportunities. Stump improved to 2-3-1 with the win for Whitworth and also had two saves.
Â
Pacific will be on the road for their only match next weekend, playing at Lewis & Clark on Saturday at noon. Whitworth returns home next weekend to host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
