FOREST GROVE –
Tyler Howe (Fr., Aumsville, Ore.) came alive for a victory at 174 pounds Thursday night, giving Pacific their lone win in a 50-3 loss to No. 2 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon in men's wrestling action at the Stoller Center.
Howe earned his 12th win of the season over Reed Tennyson. After neither wrestler scored in the first round, Howe took control with a pair of takedowns in the second period and owned a narrow 4-3 lead. After Howe scored a pair an escape and a takedown to go up 7-3, Tennyson charged back with an escape and takedown of his own to come within 7-6. Howe managed one more escape to make it 8-6 and Tennyson was unable to bring him down again.
It was the lone bright spot on the night as the Boxers (0-8) gave up five pins, a technical fall and a pair of forfeits to their downstate rivals. The Raider improved to 9-2 in dual meets this season.
After a Pacific forfeit at 125 pounds,
Eric Harder (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) opened by taking a narrow lead over Devin Poppen in the first round of the 133-pound bout. Harder chose the neutral position to open the second period, and Poppen responded with a takedown that Harder would not get out of. Poppen secured the pin with 15 seconds left in the second and the Raiders were rolling with a 12-0 lead.
Keith Thomas (Fr., Fremont, Calif.) put together a scrappy effort against Trevor Hancock at 141 pounds, but proved unable to score in a 6-0 decision. Tyler Cowger extended the Raiders' lead to 21-0 when he scored a first round pin of
Shawn Speer (Jr., Battle Ground, Wash. ) at 149 pounds.
Dalton Urrutia gave Southern Oregon more bonus points with his 16-1 technical fall over
Ricky Ridela (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii) at 157 pounds and a Pacific forfeit at 165 allowed the Raider a commanding 32-0 lead. After Howe put Pacific on the board, the Raiders finished night with Jacob Abrams (184), Taylor Johnson (197) and Clayton Burtis (285) all scoring pins.
Pacific returns to action on Sunday, hosting the Boxer Open at the Stoller Center at 10 a.m.
