Boxers get revenge on Pios in four

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific gained a measure of revenge during a four set volleyball win over Lewis & Clark at the Stoller Center on Saturday night.

The Boxers, who lost earlier this season to the Pioneers in five sets, took down their visitors 25-19, 25-18, 8-25, 25-16. The win evened Pacific's record in the Northwest Conference at 5-5 and they are now 8-10 overall. Lewis & Clark is also 5-5 in league play and 8-9 overall.

Since these two teams last met on Sept. 19, they have been heading in slightly different directions. Pacific was 1-7 after the loss to L&C in Portland. Fast forward nearly one month later, and coach Kip Yoshimura's team has now won six of its last seven matches. The Pioneers have lost five of their last six.

"It's great to get back to winning," Yoshimura said. "Other than set three, I thought we were in control of the match. We played some spectacular back row defense tonight."

In set one, the Boxers broke open a 7-7 game with a 6-0 run on Morgan Mendicino's serve. They would be ahead by as many as nine points before settling for the 25-19 verdict. In set two, with the game tied at 15-15, the Boxers busted out an 8-0 run and won going away, 25-18.

The third set came out of nowhere as the Pioneers dominated from the get go. Lewis & Clark scored 10 straight points on the serve of Emma Contreras and rolled the Boxers (25-8) to pull to within a set. But the home team used the same recipe in the fourth set that they used in the first two, breaking open a tight game at 12-12 with a 11-3 run to pull away, Aces by Karissa Komo for the 22nd and 23rd point of the set helped seal the deal (25-16).

Marie Rewick led Pacific with 10 kills, had three aces and 14 digs. Komo had four aces as the Boxers fired in 10 overall. Lia Zablan dug 17 balls, while Ciara Smith was a force at the net with two solo blocks and four block assists.

"As it has been for us all year, everyone has to play well," Yoshimura explained. "We can't rely on any one person. We have been following this formula well lately win or lose and that is the key for us."

Julia Somers led the Pioneers with 13 kills and Alexe Navarro had 24 digs for the Pios.

Pacific will take on NWC leader Willamette next Friday night (Oct. 23), at home. Start time will be 7 p.m.
